The Angel Hotel

Recently stayed at the Angel Hotel with work colleagues for a mix of work and social activities, we also ate dinner in the restaurant and had lunch in the courtyard. Everything about the stay was exceptional, including the quality of the bedrooms and the food. Breakfast was outstanding. I would especially like to highlight the quality of the service that was provided. All of the staff were so incredibly friendly and helpful; without doubt they contributed to make our stay a great success and I would highly recommend the Angel in Abergavenny.

Wow, this is an absolutely beautiful boutique hotel with outstanding staff! We visited for my wife’s birthday and absolutely loved it. We had our teenage daughter with us (14) and the hotel came up with a great solution - two bedrooms set inside one lockable door. Our rooms were stunning and so cosy. I have to praise in particular Natalia on the front desk - and Patrick, Alex and Sonu in the restaurant. Their consistent care, attention to detail and warmth was genuine. You can’t train that, it’s about getting the right people.. We had the Afternoon Tea. It is absolutely legendary and the best Afternoon Tea I have ever tasted - even better than any I have had in London. Most Afternoon Teas focus too much on the sweet. One of the special elements with this one is it is a much better balance between savoury and sweet to make it a proper meal. You can easily have it early as a lunch if you want to (starts from 1pm). There were many surprises and everything was utter perfection - so fresh. The room in which it is served is not too large and not too quiet - just a relaxing buzz and the tables are well spaced from each other. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference. I ordered an Americano and they brought a double espresso with enough hot water for me to make it as strong as I liked. I was impressed The public areas are so varied with something for everyone. The decor is high end but retains the character of this beautiful building. It feels smart, individual, warm, homely - everything you would want in a hotel. Everywhere is beautifully clean and maintained in a way that does not intrude on your stay. Abergavenny itself is a charming town with a warm and friendly local community. We were lucky enough to visit when the Steam Rally was on and it was a highlight of our visit - like the sort of traditional fair that used to be in years gone by, and which you can’t really get in the London region anymore. So relaxing. There is lots to do in the local area and it is a great base for exploring South Wales if you have a car. The hotel has a small car park on site so best to book in advance. If I could improve one thing about the hotel it would only be to boost the WiFi as we didn’t have any in our bedroom whereas in my daughter’s room it was fine. The WiFi downstairs in the hotel works well. It’s a minor point and did not impact our stay. Thank you to all the team at the Angel for giving us probably the best hotel experience of our life and for making my wife’s birthday so special. You are all a class act and you should feel very proud of the great work you are doing.

The photos do not do this hotel justice. It is a mix of modern and old with each area in a different style but all sytlishly decorated. The rooms have lovely touches like plants, music playing when you enter and a hand written welcome message. Our room had a sofa and was like being at home. Very comfy beds and pillows. Pre paid for breakfast and there is an extensive breakfast menu to choose from. A super overnight stay - well worth staying here. We ate out so did not have dinner here.

The food and service here is excellent! The training the waiters and waitresses must have had here, is outstanding. Every guest there, is treated with the upmost curtesy - service out of a text book. Food is always good- not Michelin star but far far better than any pub grub and actually good value for good quality food. Always spotless here too! Thank you again- never disappoints.

My wife and I decided last minute to go to The Angel for an evening meal. It was a Tuesday, so we hoped it would be relatively quiet. We have been for several meals at The Angel, all of which have been excellent. On this particular evening, there was a table available in the bar area, the staff were helpful and welcoming. My wife ordered the wild garlic pesto tagliatelle, but it had unfortunately just run out. Instead she decided on a small portion of the venison tagliatelle. We ordered salt and pepper squid to share as a starter, and I went for the black bean vege burger. The squid was OK, a bit tough to be honest and the coating seemed hard, overcooked. I've had better. The mains arrived. The burger was a bit underwhelming in its presentation, for a £20 vege burger. Pretty basic burger with fries in a little dish with two pots of mayo and ketchup. Not overly inspiring. The burger itself was very soft so just broke apart when trying to eat it in the bun. I resorted to a knife and fork. Overall flavour was OK, nothing special, a bit bland really. The 'small' venison tagliatelle was a good sized portion. But as soon as my wife tasted it, she said it was bitter. She added some seasoning and tried again but the meat was hard, overcooked, possibly burnt. The mince was like small rubbery pellets, very unappetising. She did say to one of the staff that it was overcooked and in all fairness they took it away and took it off the bill. My wife didn't want anything else by this time. As I said, we've really enjoyed several lovely meals previously, so this was a disappointment and a surprise. We will return, but consistency of quality is important. We opted for The Angel instead of a pub meal, because we expected high quality.

Great food good variety extensive selection of teas and coffees. There is also Champagne, Presco etc. The service is excellent. Cleanliness and detail spot on. All customers made to feel welcome. Looking forward to our next visit and would definitely recommend.
