Stayed 10 nights in seaview 'bungalow' which is a bit of a misnomer as they are really apartments in blocks on the hillside. We were disappointed with our room which IMO was not of 5 star quality. Dated and old fashioned with very small bathroom and shower over bath. Although we'd booked a double room and this is an adults, primarily couples hotel, it had two twin beds simply pushed together. Sea view from balcony is only partial as looking over other buildings and view throughout the hotel is somewhat marred by a large abandoned hotel shell, adjacent but to the fore of the Aquila. The hotel grounds are well maintained and overall very clean. Pool is nice as are the various terraces around the sea with plenty of good quality sunbeds and well padded cushions, although the gravelly beach is tiny and you can't really see it for the sunbeds. Food overall is good even though it doesn't vary hugely and could be hotter, as is the case with most buffet restaurants. I guess because it was early in the season and the hotel wasn't very full, the the most attractive dining option, the Mirabello, on the seafront, was only open for lunch, although the other a la carte courtyard restaurant, whose name escapes me was open. HB guests get 25% discount here. Service at both these places was superior to in the main buffet restaurant, where there sometimes appeared to be a lack of staff and we could struggle to get drinks at both breakfast and dinner. Drinks are not cheap. Very few bottles of wine under 35 euro, cocktails 12/14, cappuccino 5.5, for example. If youre going to spend a fair amount of time at the hotel then upgrading to AI is probably worth it, noting that quite a few items still have supplements. The spa was good, albeit a bit pricey and there is an indoor pool. Gym had modern equipment but is very small and there are no free weights. There is well stocked shop on site. In terms of location, the hotel is situated in an area of upmarket hotels and doesn't have a very Greek feel. Unless you just want to flop for the duration you really need a car. You can walk into the harbour village of Elounda which has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants but it is 3km, with a fairly steep short hill out of the hotel. Taxis are plentiful and cost 12 euro each way. We chose to do this several times even though we were HB for the variety and lack of evening entertainment at the hotel. Some nights not even any background music and restaurants close at 9pm. Perhaps it's a bit livelier later in the season. Overall we had a pleasant stay but we wouldn't chose to visit again.
