We booked a room in the coach house, but were delighted to be upgraded to a garden room. We noticed there is a fair bit of traffic noise from a nearby road which may affect coach house rooms whereas the garden view room we stayed in and the public rooms in the hotel were totally quiet. The hotel consists of a sympathetically restored manor house, maintaining its delightful architectural features, yet offering modern facilities and decor, all in excellent condition. The room we stayed in (33) appears to be in a modern but sympathetically designed extension and was spacious with comfortable beds, a good size telly, and a modern bathroom with walk-in shower, but no bath. Providing a blanket instead of a duvet was no problem. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a kettle were provided. Everything was clean and in good condition. The room overlooked the hotel's garden with the countryside beyond. It was about 3/4 mile to walk into Applebury town where there are pubs and alternative places to eat. Breakfast in the hotel was very good, freshly cooked, served hot, a good selection on offer. Dinner could be taken in their fine dining restaurant, or their bistro. We opted for the bisto and found the food OK with generous portions, but with room for improvement in preparation. Duck Confit showed no sign of being marinated in garlic and herbs before cooking, the skin was soft and the bed of lentils it was served on could have been a delicious ragout, but it wasn't. Seafood pasta lacked significant seafood, carbonara lacked bacon and cheese (pecorino) and was swimming in cream which shouldn't have been there. There were some good wines on offer, but with a starting price of just under £30, the quality was as good as expected. The hotel's bar had a good selection of drinks and 2 draft beers. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. If you like walking there are several opportunities straight out of the hotel. We did a delightful 10 miles visiting Hoff and Great Ormside, returning to Appleby for afternoon tea. Other routes north of the A66 could easily be plotted
