The Game Cock Inn

We had booked the weekend in Austwick for walks in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s a beautiful part of the world. We had pre-booked dinner at the Gamecock Inn for the Friday night with our friends and 2 dogs. What a lovely experience we had. A real home feel, wonderful staff and awesome food. We enjoyed it that much we booked again for the Saturday evening. A cooler evening and the log fires roaring away. Over the 2 meals we had tried 8 different mains and 5 puddings with all getting five stars. Restaurant food at its best. Make sure you book ahead so you are not disappointed.

What a little gem of a place this is. We called in for lunch only to find that a large group of touring cyclists had just come in and were waiting to be served food. The very friendly bar manager said that he would check if we could be served as they were almost full and this was a Thursday lunchtime. We were told that there wasn't a problem and we were seated and a short time later our order was taken. Considering how many people were there our food came out in super quick time. We both ordered baguettes which came with a huge salad, beetroot falafel and a portion of chips. Quite frankly one portion would have been enough to feed both of us it was that big. Really good value for money, total cost including drinks was £35.

The most fantastic meal, the service was brilliant and the food was absolutely to die for, would 100% come back and 100% recommend. We did have to book but I am very glad that we did, the desserts were excellent, there was a choice of sticky toffee pudding, some french patisseries, tarts, ice creams and crème brûlée. If you’re staying in the area, you must come here! Fantastic value for money too :)

Great atmosphere in this village pub, nice selection of ales and a perfectly cooked sirloin steak, all four of us had a steak with all the trimmings and a lovely dressed side salad, one of the tastiest steaks I’ve ever had, very attentive staff and reasonably priced. You’ll need to book as the pub gets very busy

We have just stayed at the Game Cock Inn, we will definitely be back when this way again. The owners and staff were lovely and so helpful. The room we stayed in was a small double and it was perfect, had a comfy nights sleep and a great shower in the morning. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Can't fault this charming little place.

Really great little inn, perfect location for walking with many breathtaking scenes on the doorstep. Austwick is a quiet peaceful village and the Inn was very relaxing and comfortable. The room was very nicely decorated and the cleanest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. The bed was very comfortable, the room was warm and quiet. The restaurant makes the best French food I’ve had in the UK and the service was exceptional despite the fact they were short staffed (I will review the restaurant separately in more detail). Breakfast was excellent too with plenty of choice for vegetarians. This is not a pretentious fancy place - it’s clean, cosy, and relaxed, which I much prefer. And good value for money. There’s also a very nice on site bakery that we bought some tarts to take home for the kids. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that there were a couple of minor maintenance issues with the room (broken shower door and remote control not working) and also a shame the inn doesn’t have a cosy drinking-by-the-fire space, as it was all dining tables only, which were reserved. It would be nice if there were a few easy chairs or sofas to sit and relax. However, other than that it was perfect.
