The Lodge at Salhouse

Decided to book here for a Sunday roast, and didn’t disappoint, the atmosphere in the restaurant was nice and friendly, we were seated in the restaurant area near the window. The food was amazing, very big portions, presentation was great and service was also very good. Will definitely be returning

We are fans of this family business, having eaten at all their restaurants, so want to try a stop-over. The Lodge is a quintessential Norfolk Georgian building which has been done up to look smart. Check-in was super fast. Our room (Ash) was spacious, as was the bathroom. The wifi was intermittent which was annoying and I couldn't get the TV to tune to Live channels. Breakfast in the morning was 5 stars, as was the service provide by all the crew, who are friendly and can't do enough for you. We paid a great rate for the room, enjoyed our stay and will be back!

This is a lovely and very popular place. We went for dinner on Saturday night and enjoyed a very good meal, with friendly and pleasant service. Some tables were perhaps a little close together, but not so much as to cause an issue. The only thing I would say is that dogs are allowed in the restaurant area as well as the bar, which we found a bit surprising. Just a note in case (like my husband) you get slight allergy symptoms to dog hair when it gets in the atmosphere. Luckily, the dog at the next table wasn't one that sheds hair, but the place was too busy for them to have moved us if it had been and we'd probably have had to leave!

Faultless family meal for table of 13! I eat out quite regularly in the local area, but I have to say the team at The Lodge were faultless on this visit. They brought out all 13 meals together, piping hot, generous portions too. All waiting staff were very attentive and I noticed they kept doing loops around the room, so there was always someone on hand. The place was busy with a really good atmosphere, the background music was drowned out by the room chatter at one point, but they increased the volume just right which only added to the atmosphere and someone had a good playlist on too! The music usually gets overlooked. Although we eat out at the other Colchester Inn establishments, this one is becoming more of a favourite. It’s more spacious, furnished to a higher standard and has a good varied brunch menu too, (which we have tried a few times). Minor points… A slight wait for the bill at the end but they were busy, which is a good thing anyway 🙂 The chips aren’t to my taste, a bit strange and greasy 🤔 I would thoroughly recommend giving it a try if you haven’t already. Amazing setting - Large car park and pretty pergola walkway with lights leading to a beautiful building in lovely grounds. Inside has wonderful decor and lovely touches. Main restaurant very grand and tables and chairs really luxurious. All the waitresses were outstanding and friendly. Food was incredible. Will definitely be our favourite place to come and enjoy a meal out. Very special place to visit.

We chose this hotel because it's beautiful, set in the gorgeous countryside, quiet, restaurant reviews excellent. But we stayed two nights, and I'm so disappointed. We arrived and were given a lovely welcome and shown to our room. Immediately all you could hear was a loud noise. It turned out that our room was immediately next to the kitchen extractor fan. Now this fan is huge and on the roof of the kitchen, eye level to our bedroom window. The noise was insane. We went away for a romantic two days in the countryside and I think it would have been quieter pitching a tent on the Norwich Airport runway. We asked to switch rooms but were told that none were available. I had prepaid, so we were stuck. We were however told that the extractor would be turned off at 8.30pm, so not too bad. This was a lie. We had a beautiful lunch in the restaurant, then back to the room where we had to shout at each other to be heard and turn the TV up stupidly loud to hear it. Other things we noticed. No hand soap on the sink, no spare toilet roll, no sugar to have with your coffee. The extractor was turned off at 11pm on the dot. It started every morning at 7.30am, and there was no way you could sleep through it. The morning of the second day we were asked if we would like our room cleaning. Yes please. The bed was made, clean cups were there, but still no sugar, no soap, no toilet roll, no clean towels and our glasses that were clearly dirty from last nights red wine, unwashed. The breakfast was gorgeous and the staff excellent, hence the 2 stars. I wanted to give one star, but I'm sleep deprived and feeling generous. Sadly, a waste of money. Our romantic trip ruined by an extractor fan.
