Welcome to the High Country Hobo Preserve. Our hidden gem is nestled in the Cleveland National Forrest. Guest cabin has all amenities: wood burning fireplace -wood provided, board games, fishing poles, tent, horse shoes, bbq, and gold pans for when the creek is flowing. An outdoor fire pit is available when winds are calm and you are welcome to put our tent up and sleep under the stars. Our cabin has old character, unique charm, and is 22 miles to the old mining town of Julian. Kitchen has fridge, hot plate, griddle, microwave, coffee maker- coffee tea cocoa are provided. Please note there is no stove or oven. Pets are welcome & encouraged!The High Country Hobo Preserve is located in the small city of Descanso, meaning Rest From Labor. We are about 45 minutes from Downtown San Diego yet a world away. The guest cabin sits on our 1 acre property which has a main cabin, guest cabin, horse corral, and billiard room (we are in the process of restoring this room however you can still use it to play darts or billiards). The cabin built in 1890 was originally a small one bedroom stone cabin constructed by a woman who bartered with Native American Groups for stones from Mt. Laguna to build her home. Over the years the main cabin, now our bedroom, has been added on to however the structure still maintains its original character. The Guest Cabin stands alone across from our home so you don't need to see us or even interact with us unless you're looking for local tips. The cabin is surrounded by National Forrest to the north and the west to give you privacy. There is plenty of parking on the property. We ask that you limit shower time due to well water restrictions. Our cabin does not have central heat and air as we prefer to keep it outdated for a more authentic feel however during the summer a window A/C can keep you cool and in the winter the wood burning stove heats the whole cabin comfortably. The area has mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, bald eagles, wild turkey, deer, and when warm rattle snakes so please use caution when exploring. You can access trails from our backyard and wonder among the variety of trees, rocks, and it is an excellent location to search for native gems and for star gazing at night. Fishing poles are left for your use, Lake Cuyamaca has great rainbow trout, bass, and catfish and if you get lucky and land that giant trout you are welcome to use our bbq. :)As our home sits on this property we are not far from you if you need anything however a key will be left for you to gain entrance. You have full use of the land around the cabin. Perkins is a small market about 10 minutes from our home and has supermarket basics in addition there is a fruit stand on the corner of our street offering local organic treats. There is a full fridge to keep items cool. There is a TV with built in DVD player, bring your movies or pick from ours. There iare no active TV stations or cable as we want you to disconnect and enjoy the area, there is wifi. A bit more about the area:The Cuyamaca Mountains are a hidden gem in San Diego so I hope you enjoy it here. A few things I tell our visitors that are looking for activities are: Cuyamaca State Park has many activities from hiking, fishing, horse riding. Julian which is an old mining town is about 20 miles away and has shops food gold panning, and Mount Laguna/ Pine Valley are also close with amazing hikes and views down to the Salton Sea. Anzo Borrego Desert is about 35 minutes from the house, hot but stunning views of desert life. There is a bear/lion preserve in the Cuyamacas. About 45 minutes away- beautiful drive through the mountains is a little town called Ramona, there is a camel preserve there- you can ride the camels and its amazing. You can also set out for a hike/picnic from our property and explore on your own. If you want to check in earlier or perhaps stay later on your check out date we are very flexible, it just depends if others have booked. Escape to this adorable cabin on 2 tree-filled acres in picturesque Julian. Perched atop the beautifully peaceful Pine Hills community and just a short drive to the quaint town of Julian. This one-of-a-kind hand-hewn custom log cabin which features two large master bedrooms, a picturesque window room (with bed), and a loft (with bed). the cabin includes a king bed, 2 queen beds, 2 full beds, and a cozy futon. Sleeping 8 comfortably (and 1 more on the couch if you want!). The kitchen is large and great for cooking. This cabin is perfect for families or groups of friends. Enjoy the convenience of 3 bathrooms (2 full and one with a dry sauna, shower, and a large bathtub). Stay connected with WiFi, watch tv, stay comfortable with heating and AC, and take care of laundry with a washing machine. Iron out any wrinkles before heading out to explore the fabulous surroundings which include a charming downtown area and local hiking trails. This is such a special place. Relax on the porch with your morning coffee, lounge or nap in the porch-swing-bed, take nice walks on the winding roads, and gaze out at the stars at night (very little light pollution!). Also, it's not uncommon to see wild turkey, and deer during your stay!We hope you enjoy what our place and Julian has to offer.NOTE: Keep in mind this community is surrounded by nature. The area strikes a nice balance between a safe community feel and a sense of being "out in the woods", but not isolated. There are neighbors in the community, but from almost all areas of the property other cabins/houses cannot be seen, given we're atop the hill and have 2 acres). You'll experience a nice sense of peaceful privacy. With the surrounding nature and our hand-hewn log cabin (with its charming quirks), comes a bit of a rustic experience, but with the comforts of home; Air Conditioning, heat, WiFi, TVs, and all the cozy amenities shown and listed above. Be prepared for the possibility of some bugs around the property (might wanna bring some bug spray in the summer months). Nestled in Pine Hills of Julian, this uniquely decorated cedar cabin was built in 1927 and has been featured in the Julian Home Christmas Tour. My cabin is rented as 5 bedrooms and 2 baths if requested the 6th bedroom and 3rd bath can be rented for an additional cost. The basic rate per night is for two people. Cozy Cabin Overlooking Beautiful Lake Cuyamaca Come enjoy some of San Diego's forgotten beauty in this gorgeous, Piute Trail mountain cabin overlooking Lake Cuyamaca and just minutes from the quaint little town of Julian. During your stay, you'll have a chance to see wild deer grazing in the nearby pastures below, wild turkey foraging up and down the hillside (sometimes they even visit the deck!), raccoon's getting into their usual mischief, bald eagles soaring above or swooping in for a quick meal, owls, orioles, blue-jays, migratory ducks & geese, woodpeckers... and the list goes on! If you're into bird watching and/or photography, this is a great place for both! Using the cabin as a base camp, you'll be able to explore Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and Cleveland National Forest ,Anza-Borrego State Park with their many trails and viewpoints; fish for Florida bass, smallmouth bass, trout, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and even white sturgeon (Yes, our lake has sturgeon!); picnic on Fletcher Island; go boating; or just take in the peaceful surroundings and vast views from the comfort of the cozy cabin! Built in the 1970s, the A-Frame sits in the center of Pinecrest Retreat a vintage trailer park established in 1961. Pinecrest Retreat is located on 80 acres and is home to 140 trailers, a hiking trail, and a junior Olympic size pool opened seasonally (Memorial Day weekend till the end of September). Owners of these trailers cannot live on site but have access to their trailers as a weekend getaway spot. Pinecrest Retreat is about four miles from town and four miles from Lake Cuyamaca.The A-Frame features a 360-square foot cathedral ceilinged open space with a sitting and dining area. A kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, gas stove & oven, sink, coffee maker, plates & utensils and most of the basics. The A-Frame has a bedroom downstairs with a queen size bed (with twin size trundle in the closet), a full bath, and an open loft upstairs with a king size bed and balcony. We supply fresh linens, blankets, and bath towels. The A-Frame also comes with a stereo and WIFI but no television is provided. There is a large private backyard with a gathering area, a propane grill and Cowboy Calderon fire pit. YOUR STAY: This lovely family cabin is a perfect getaway for those who love nature. It is a beautiful spot, surrounded by trees. Only one mile from town, even less to a wonderful brewery and several great wineries. Enjoy your coffee or glass of delicious local wine from several seating areas. Both have the sound of water for your pleasure. There is a table and chairs and a waterfall pond. There are lights strung in the tree, making this a great place to BBQ on the gas grille, or just to enjoy the evening. There is a café table and the sound of a fountain with views of Vulcan Mountain. We often see birds, wild turkeys and deer on the property. THE CABIN: Two bedroom, one bath with 1,200 square feet. Inside is a large living room with plenty of seating to enjoy a nice fire, watch Netflix, Prime or play some of the many board games on hand. The hand made coffee table has a built in checkers board. There is a dinning table for six and in the kitchen a table for four. The kitchen is fully stocked. There is a Keurig on the counter and a regular coffee maker in the cupboard. There is a four piece toaster and a small crock pot, as well as the normal pots and pans. We have a limited supply of coffee and tea for your enjoyment. The front bedroom has a King bed with comfy bedding and pillows. There are reading lights, phone charger and a ceiling fan for your convenience. The back bedroom includes a Queen and Double bed with the same comfy bedding. The bathroom has a combo tub/shower, basic toiletries included, and plush towels. The hall closet contains a variety of board and card games. Coloring books and crayons for the kids. There are even books if anyone wants to enjoy reading around the fire or outside under a tree. WHAT TO DO: There are many wonderful restaurants, wineries, breweries and cideries around Julian. In the Info Book provided in the cabin, you will find lots of info and recommendations about them. There are some really cute coffee shops as well, and please don’t forget the famous apple pie as you are wandering around town enjoying the quaint stores filled with small town treasures. The hiking is amazing around Julian. Nearby, there are the Vulcan Mountain trailhead and Santa Ysabel East Preserve trailhead. A bit further are the hikes near Cuyamaca, including Stonewall Peak, and Laguna including Desert View Trail, and Big Laguna Trailhead. Julian is also a stop for some of the PCT hikers. Gold mining and gold mining tours are available. Julian is famous for their apples. Apple Days usually start in early fall where you can pick your own or buy from bins of all varieties. In early spring there are hills covered with daffodils and a bit later the lilacs fill the air with their beautiful fragrance. Julian is also certified as a Dark Skies Community and you will see plenty of stars in the night sky.THE HISTORY: Our family has owned this cabin since 1939. Our Grandpa built it with lots of help from friends and family. It has been added on, redone and refurbished many times. It is filled with some of our family treasures for you to enjoy.
