I was looking forward to a wonderful 3-night stay at Nikolas Rooms in Chania but alas, reality had other plans. Upon arrival, we were greeted not by a charming reception but by a reception area in need of its own housekeeper, with clutter and random items scattered across the floor and desk. My first thought: 'If this is the reception, what surprises await the rooms?' Our host was... let’s just say, an interesting character, seemingly more invested in his own affairs than in ours. As for the room itself—let’s just say it had clearly not been touched by the magic of Photoshop that was used for the online photos. One bed was broken (we were told it would be fixed, but this mythical repair never materialised), and while the bed sheets seemed clean, it was hard to tell if they were fresh or if the bed-making was just an exercise in creative folding. The room décor was very much ‘DIY with what you have lying around,’ featuring a mix of furniture that didn’t quite get along, plastic cups for tea and coffee, and a safe that looked like it might escape from the wall at any moment. On the bright side, the towels were wonderfully fluffy, and the bathroom was actually spotless—a small victory! We ventured to the rooftop deck, which had the potential to be a lovely evening spot overlooking the plaza. Unfortunately, this area too was crying out for some love, with broken chairs, sad-looking cushions, and a general lack of thought in its arrangement. With a bit of TLC, Nikolas Rooms could be decent, but at the price we paid, we found far better accommodation for nights 2 and 3 in Chania.
