Spencer Hotel & Spa Chautauqua

Never got our refund as agreed… the Owner ignored us…a very very old hotel in major need of renovations or demolition. Bathroom space almost inexistent. No staffing. My grand grand parents age owner should sell and retire. Hire a cook, server etc…Way overpriced. Beyond response time and cutting our losses! No need to respond. Will never return!

We had a wonderful stay at the Spencer Hotel for valentines day weekend. I love the concept of the uniquely decorated rooms that each have their own individual charm. The family that runs the business is extremely welcoming and friendly. They serve delicious homemade breakfast every morning which was the perfect way to start the day. I highly recommend staying here.

This is possibly the most charming hotel we have ever been to. The themed rooms are such a treat. Everything was really clean and LeAnn and Helen went out of their way to make us feel so welcome and at home. The resident puppy, Hannah, is the best girl in the world, and she made our stay even more special. Will definitely be back.

This was a lovely place to stay on site of the Chautauqua Institute. We were there after the season ended so were delighted that such a great place was still open! The hosts are just the best. Friendly, knowledgeable and focused on making your stay enjoyable. Breakfasts were my favorite. Delicious food served in a relaxing, beautiful dining room overlooking the front landscaping. We spent a lovely late afternoon reading on a large front porch in comfy chairs. Truly a delightful stay.

Let's just say - they have a good photographer and post compelling photos on their website. On the plus side, you can't beat the location. It's a few buildings down from the Amphitheater, so you can enjoy the evening symphony easily from the porch or terrace. Also, the entire staff was kind and helpful. They really tried to accommodate the guests, but there was this sense that these gals were quite fearful of screwing up. On the downside, the room was straightened up, but it didn't feel clean - especially post-pandemic clean. The room we stayed in had 1-1/2 bathrooms - both very small with no room to hold personal belongings. The shower experience was no better than you'd find at a campground. The amenities were cheap and never replenished, so we ended up buying shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at the plaza store. The floor wasn't level, evidenced by our roller bags rolling around on their own. The bed was way too soft and uncomfortable. There was no airflow in the room and there was no way to control the air conditioning. The windows were permanently shut. Despite the Spencer's charm and history, we won't be staying here again.

This property is a lovingly restored hotel from the late 1800s. It is a hop skip and jump to the Amphitheater and all the important venues. Each room is named after a famous author and decorated accordingly with period furnishings and details. I stayed in the Jane Austen room which faced the west and had plenty of sunshine which is important to me. Breakfast is included which is wonderful and necessary, where you get to meet the other guests - a fun and enjoyable part of your experience. The staff and the owners are warm and caring and interested in making your stay a memorable one. The only reason I gave a 4 star is my room had a bathtub and a shower head. I wanted a shower but rooms with showers were taken. My suggestion - book early and specify your preferences.
