Reception staff very friendly and helpful. When I tried to check in the staff didn’t have my name but only my friends even though I was the one that paid for the room? Bar food was nice enough but quite expensive over £18 for 1 panini, 1 chips, soft drink & a tea! Room was clean and tidy and very quiet but unfortunately didn’t have the best sleep as bed was really uncomfortable, springs coming through the mattress and really lumpy hard pillows also which was a shame! Stayed there as music event was on at the Colchester Park and looked like it was the nearest hotel to it but walking there was a bit tricky as had to go across a main road and through a dodgy alleyway behind an industrial building which wasn’t signposted after the event had to walk the long way around through the town to get back to the hotel.

The suite we ha was good. The air conditioning was like an Asthmatic blowing on you. If you want to have a shower then you have to put ut on at least 15 minutes before you get in it. To get luke warm water. Our room was right above the wedding venue so got not much sleep. The room cost £200 a night and no breakfast included. Not worth the money.

if you stay at this hotel make sure you stay on the top floor as I was kept awake by the floorboards creaking every time someone in the room above walked on them. I could also hear someone snoring next door through the very thin walls. The hotel needs a make over as it is so old & tired looking & bathroom wasn't very clean. £91 for a single room to be kept awake all night is not what I expected. The location is good & service given by Chris at breakfast was excellent

My husband booked here for a night away for my birthday . We arrived and the receptionist was so welcoming and helpful. As we arrived quite early we asked to log our car in then go for a walk but we were told our room was ready and we could go straight to it. On arrival of our room we were welcomed with a lovely towel animal on the bed ( pic below) and I thanked the housekeeper who was also lovely and wished me happy birthday. They also left a birthday card :) Room was spacious and airy with great aircon. Food was top notch. Would highly recommend.

Really good hotel, breakfast was amazing (Thank You Peter for great service, your friendly smile cheered me up). Rooms ok and good location. The rooms are not huge but clean and functional. The location is very central indeed. The breakfast really was perfect.

I booked this for my 50th birthday. From the very beginning they made things easy offering us the use of the Suffolk Room as there were quite a few of us. Communication was excellent by the events staff and when I arrived the table had already been decorated and the chairs looked beautiful with covers on them The afternoon Tea was absolutely lovely and we had the room from 1pm-5pm (afternoon tea at 2pm) They asked about dietary requirements when booking and these were adhered to. Its free parking but also near to the train station. Lovely sandwiches with a good choice plus quiche, also a selection of mouse, scones and copious amounts of cake and tea or coffee all served beautifully and by attentive staff who kept checking in on us. So friendly and welcoming and we all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. They were happy to give us a take away box too when we had stuff left as so many different selections of cake etc. I also had a surprise of a dessert bought out saying Happy Birthday. We could also order alcoholic drinks (additional charge) if we so wished. What a wonderful place to celebrate and would definitely go back again even for afternoon tea or lunch. Thank you County Hotel we all loved it and had a wonderful time thanks to your great service and attention to detail Staff were really lovely, helpful and friendly and took some lovely pictures too for us. We were made so welcome.

We have recently returned from a very pleasant 2-night stay at the County Hotel, Chelmsford. We only booked a standard room which although slightly on the small side was clean, well furnished and had all that was necessary for a comfortable short stay. Lighting was good and although the room didn’t have air conditioning a large fan was provided. Our room was very quiet, the bed comfortable, and we both slept well. The bathroom was spacious, clean and had the added advantage of natural light and ventilation – something I always appreciate. On the first night of our stay, we enjoyed dinner in the hotel’s Samphire Restaurant – an attractively decorated, clean, comfortable venue. The food was well cooked and tasty and service was excellent, thank you Grace (hope I have remembered your name correctly!). Prices were average for a restaurant of this class in this area. One can also dine in the hotel’s Rainsford bar – there is a degree of menu overlap between the bar and the Samphire restaurant particularly for the more popular dishes, but the menus do differ so it maybe worth looking at both before deciding where to eat within the hotel – the bar seemed to offer more pub style favourites whilst the restaurant choices tended to be more up-market. The bar also has quite a lot of outside seating – whilst this only offers a view of the car park the opportunity to sit outside might be welcomed on a hot summer’s day. We chose to stay at this hotel due to its central location as we needed to catch a very early train from Chelmsford station. Within 5 to 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel one can reach the station and the town centre with its shops, restaurants, cathedral and theatre. The hotel has a large car park but to ensure that this is reserved for hotel users (and not used as a free car park for the station etc.) a charge is made – you need to enter your car’s registration number when entering the hotel to ensure that you do not end up with a parking fine. Currently, (October 2024), the charge for overnight parking is £9.00. Overall, this was a very good stay and if we needed to stay in central Chelmsford again it is highly likely that we would return to this hotel.

Our apartment we had booked in Chelmsford turned out to be a disaster and not clean, we could not stay there so we had to find last minute accommodation for our 4 nights in Chelmsford for a family wedding. We ended up booking this little gem of a hotel and were not disappointed. The staff, ALL the staff were so lovely and bent over backwards to assist. The room was clean and tidy and enough room to move around even with a single fold up bed put in for our 5 year old. This hotel is quite old and there is a lot of noise that travels through out the rooms because of the thin walls but it did not matter as we were so comfortable there. The rooms was changed and cleaned daily even the towels were changed with out us asking. The restaurant is actually some of the best food we had through the UK. Who ever is the chef really cares about the food that goes out. Even the kids menu was fab, actual real food grilled salmon and vege, was a wonderful change from chicken nuggets! If we are ever back in Chelmsford we would stay here again. Don't be put off from the older exterior as this has the feel of a good country, family run hotel, where the staff really care about their guests. They made a stressful situation stress free.
