Calala Lodge

A true gem-owners and staff are wonderful-pool is heavenly-food and fruit smoothies are amazing-short walk to wee village of Caybuya-every thing you need for the unique Calala experience. We loved it so much we extended our stay. The Howler monkeys climbing in the tree canopy over our cabin was a total bonus!

Best restaurant food we have had in our 3 weeks in Costa Rica, packed full of flavour which was lacking in many restaurants. We were staying 1 km away, if we had known of this place we would probably have stayed here as it’s really cool in every way.

Pictures posted are exactly correct. Very nice grounds, single villa accommodations, well appointed. Lovely pool. Rocky beach. The fries are delicious, fruit juices cool and refreshing, and the service, top notch. We are very happy we came.

For a delightful stay at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, we suggest Calala Beach Lodge. Set on the eastern shore of the Nicoya Peninsula, it is a 30-minute drive from Montezuma, a nearby village, and 40 minutes to Santa Teresa, a surfer’s mecca on the western coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. We welcomed the peace and quiet of the Lodge’s location; but it can get busy at the weekend. Local families and groups from the area frequent the Lodge: enjoying lunch, the pool, and the beach. Families with young children are also part of the guest mix; we welcomed their company! The children were well-behaved and our interaction with them was fun. With their steeply-pitched roofs, the Lodge’s individually-separate accommodations reminded us of Swiss chalets. Our cabin was No. 2; it was clean and the bed was comfortable. Spacious but minimal in the cabin’s appointments, the real attraction is outside. On the ground floor of our cabin there is a porch with two chairs, a table, and a hammock. Inside, as part of the entry space, there is a small refrigerator, plus a small counter with a coffee maker, mugs & glasses. The bathroom is also on the ground floor. It has a wonderful outdoor shower! The high-ceilinged upper level is spacious with a king-sized bed and a couch. A ledge running the length of one side of the room was used for keeping stuff; there are also three shelves at the top of the stairs for clothing, etc. The upper porch has two deck chairs and a table, overlooking the palm trees. All staff members are friendly and helpful. Owners Matt and Cecelia, who live with their two boys at the neighboring property, are on hand at various times; Luciano, a manager, is also available. Several options are available for the included breakfast, which is served at the Lodge’s open-air dining area. The Lodge’s kitchen cooks GREAT food! We recommend enjoying a dinner or two there; we did. The mango smoothie with coconut milk is fantastic! Food and drinks are added to your room tab.   Although the Lodge fronts onto the Gulf of Nicoya, do not expect to spread a blanket and lay on the beach. It is not a sandy one, but a rocky beach. There are chairs for sitting on the beach, as well as tables and chairs for dining oceanside amid the towering palm trees. Several hammocks are in this waterside area. The pool is good fun: take a dip, sit beside it and enjoy the palm trees: relax! There is a yoga deck that we were allowed to use for our massages that we had booked ourselves through a third party. We absolutely loved staying at Calala Beach Lodge!

On the beach, with a gorgeous fresh pool, friendly staff and great food! Sunrises are worth getting up for, and the vubw is relaxed and happy throughout the day. You’ll see and hear macaws, howler monkeys and others. The beach is not very swimmable but you can go in and there are good swimming beaches nearer Montezuma. The hike at the Cabo Blanco nature reserve is long but you can swim at the end. We saw many howler monkeys on that hike. Bakery nearby is worth a visit and local microbrewery also good. Hike to Montezuma Waterfalls is short and a great swimming spot. We loved the staff at Calala Lodge and ate dinner there every night because the food was so good and reasonably priced. Rooms are comfortable and clean.

I stayed here for 6 nights and loved it. The first 2 nights, I stayed in the tiny house (cabin #8) and it was perfect - it had everything I needed and no more. The next 4 nights, I stayed in Cabina #1, a 2 story A-frame. Both were very close to the beach and there is a great yoga deck close by which overlooks the beach. Breakfast is included and is served every morning from 7:30 to 9:30. You can choose from 4 different options and all are generous portions. The beach is rocky and a challenge to swim in but beautiful to walk along. The pool is quite lovely and great for refreshing. We ate dinner there every evening overlooking the beach. Then food and service were great and there were lots of choices. The road to get there is dusty but there is no dust at the lodge. Some fun things to do in the area include walking out to Cabuya island at low tide, hiking into the Montezuma waterfalls and exploring the town. of Montezuma
