The hotel is a bit remote. Food choice is very limited and too expensive.

Stunning Views across Freycinet National Park and the Japanese 7 course meal and Shabu Shabu well worth the money!! There is currently construction work going on, which we were not made aware of but we did book through a third party, Luxury Escapes. Despite that, we had a great stay and would come back.

Svar från boendet: We are glad that you had a happy staying with us, and also thank you for your understanding about some construction works here. We are repairing and improving our road which was damaged due to past years' wet season, we are aiming to complete this work within this month, then our guests could have a much better and safe road when visiting us. We are also in the last step of landscaping works for the reception area, and hopefully get eveything completed before Easter holiday. Looking forward to welcoming you back again in the near future, and trust you will have a much better experience then.

The establishment started operations in 2019. It is located at the top of Mount Paul that is reached from Coles Bay Road via a 4 km drive along an unsealed gravel road. In late December, road work was being carried out on the road. On site construction works were also in progress during our stay. The 8 “Ocean View Studios” are closely spaced cabins located in a row at one edge of a gravel clearing of about 200 m in diameter. These cabins have a very compact layout and interior floor space ( ~25 sq m, see photos). From the cabins, the shoreline at Friendly Beach about 3 km away visible through the sliding doors at the foot of the bed. Other windows look into the adjacent cabin. Detailed photos of the interior of these studios are not shown on the resort website. The other 2 lodges called “Hazard View Retreats” have twice the interior floor area with many photos of the interior featured on the resort website. Guests who chose the Ocean View Studios based on photos of the Hazard View Retreats and descriptions of the Studios on the resort website may need to revise their expectations. The Freycinet Resort was previously called the Freycinet Eco Retreat which is probably a more accurate description of the establishment. The area around the 8 Studio cabins has been cleared of vegetation (presumably as a fire safety measure) so the unsealed gravel ground is dusty when windy as the mountain top site is quite exposed. On the opposite side of the clearing is the reception office and the Mount Paul Restaurant. The resort accommodation and the restaurant appear to be separate business enterprises. Included breakfast at the restaurant comprises self-service continental offerings. In addition, one can select 1 of 4 available hot dishes: poached eggs, French toast, chicken rice porridge and vegetarian udon noodles. The latter 2 are quite delicious with a Japanese accent. The restaurant is licensed and the service is friendly and attentive. The furnishings make extensive use of local timber with Japanese themed artefacts in the decor. The glass frontage offers a panoramic view. Dinner comprises 2 Japanese fixed price offerings: either omakase or shabu-shabu. Alternate meal options will involve at least an 8 km round trip on the gravel mountain road. Photos of Studios shown Take care in accepting descriptions on resort website

Svar från boendet: Thank you for your review. 1. We name this type of cabin as Ocean View Studio, not Ocean “Side” Studios, because they are located at the highest point of any private land in this area to give you the unblocked view, and our website clearly describes our location is at the top of Mount Paul, we never said we are next to the beach etc. so please read our information clearly. 2. Our website clearly lists different types of cabins with seperate descriptions and photos, so there is no reason guests booking the Ocean View studios based on the Hazards View Retreat, there is no way to mix them up. Actually the studios have ocean view to Friendly Beaches, the Retreats have view to Freycinet National Park & The Hazards, we have no idea how did you mixed them up? One view is ocean, another view is mountain, totally different. 3.It seems you did some search about our history, they you should know previously it is a self-contained business, no restaurant, no breakfast, no art collections, no playground, no sculpture garden, no reception staff, no lounge, no landscaping etc. which all added after the re-branding. Not to mention, Half million upgrade to the Hazards View Retreats, Half million upgrade to the lounge, million upgrade for the road, infrastructure. We appreicated your study about us, but may be a little bit more? 4. Before arriving, our staff send email to all guests to introduce food options and locations with a map, it is totally free for guests to have dinner onsite or offsite or take away from outside, and all guests totally understand our location and 4km private road from the highway to the buildings, we cannot see why you complain 8km round way. 5. Yes, the studios are 1-2 mins by walking to our restaurant, actually a lot of guests love this, as they can walk to our lounge and restaurant to enjoy the drink and dinner but without worrying about driving after drinking. Maybe you will complain again if the studios are location a little bit further from the building that you cannot walk to the restaurant? Not to mention, your bed and deck facing the ocean side, uninterrupted from any building or people. 6. Thank you for your photos, but why not add some like you had the ocean view from your bed, unblocked view from your deck? Our website provide all necessay information to all guests, we suggest you have a look before making the booking, it will benefit for all of us. Enjoy your trip in Tasmania!

No. Just no. Do not confuse this with the freycinet lodge down the road. There is a 4 k gravel road to the “resort” (it’s not!), minimalist tiny cabin and no true on site dining option. The bathroom was clean but barely adequate. We have lived on sailboats so we understand “compact” but was not to a “resort” standard. You must go down the gravel access road to go to Cole’s bay for cafe or restaurant options. The on site restaurant is under different ownership from the “resort” and only offers gourmet Japanese dinners, omikase or shabu shabu. Breakfast offering equally minimal, a continental with a choice of 3 hot breakfasts, 2 of which were Asian. No argument with the possible quality, just not what we came to Tasmania to experience. Self catering difficult. We did try. Cabin had microwave but no cookware at all, not even a salad bowl. Fridge and microwave only, hob covered and assumed out of use. The young people handling reception were charming, as usual.

Svar från boendet: Australia is the most successful multicultural society in the world, we were a little bit shock to hear your review here. Our website has detailed information about our restaurant. Maybe you need to rethink your holiday option in the future, ready the information, don't book something you do not like. Not everyone refused to accept news things like Japanese cuisine. Tasmanian experience is about the local fresh produce & seafood, it does not about if it is Japanese cuisine or "Western food" in your mind. We provided microware as an extra facility to Studio guests, actually we do not even advertised any cooking facility anywhere for our Ocean View Studios, please don't complain that you did not get more, as you have already had more than we officially listed for the Ocean View Studio. Not to mention, if you like a kitchen and a more luxury cabin, please spend $150 more to book the premium Hazards View Retreat! You cannot pay for an entry level Studio but asking for the luxury level Hazards View Retreat. Wish you could enjoy your future holiday elsewhere!

Should have listened to the Tripadvisor reviews... CONS - Agree this is a work in progress/construction. The accommodation is prefabricated modular building type construction with tiny bathroom and shower, poorly designed internal layout in my opinion. The restaurant has limited options and you get what the chef decides. We had traditional Japanese stew self-cooked in a pot on table and never again. Service hit and miss we did not get our second drinks order at all. Worst of all they expect you to boil your own drinking water in your room - at the significant nightly hotel cost charged, surely the management can consider a couple of free water bottles for their guests every day at the very least as this is minimal cost. Fortunately we only had one night here. PROS - The view from the balcony are fantastic and we spent a nice afternoon outside on the recliner seats. This could be a decent place once they have finished the place including landscaping. Would not pay this amount again even for the great outlook.
