Alejandrina Hotel

The hotel is very nice to look at and quite reasonably priced. The rooms were small but clean and everything worked well. Staff were courteous enough but didn't go much beyond that. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Breakfasts were adequate, but there is NO excuse for serving us instant coffee on our first morning. Even then, the coffee was not the highlight in a country that produces great coffee. There is free parking on site. There is a small bar across the street which can be noisy at night, so perhaps ask for one of the back rooms. The location was perfect for seeing this small walkable and safe city with its well-deserved UNESCO heritage designation - a 10-minute walk in one direction to the historic centre with its gorgeous buildings and a 10-minute walk in the other direction to the restaurants and bars of Calle Larga and the Rio Tomebamba (one of four rivers that run through this red-roofed city). If you are looking to try cuy (crispy-skinned roasted guinea pig), we loved it at Tres Estrellas on Calle Larga and thought it tasted like a cross between duck confit and pork. Make a reservation; it takes an hour to roast the cuy. We also really enjoyed our meal at El Jardin. We did a half-day city tour and were so glad we did. Cuenca is close enough to go for a hike at the fantastic El Cajas National Park with its network of trails. We also found the pre-Inca artefacts museum well worth whiling away a rainy afternoon. If you want to buy art and crafts, Casa de la Mujer (a small indoor plaza with many co-operative-run tiny artesan shops, many by women) is a great compact place to do that. Shout-out to Fabian Calderon at Pambil - he produces lovely jewellry. Did I mention we really loved Cuenca?

I don’t like that the price shown was not the same at the property if you pay with credit card

We were surprised, that to get the rate provided, we had to pay cash up front. Not a nice surprise We were able to handle the situation but paying cash up front without a receipt was unconfortable given Ecuador's reputation for corruption.

Meticulous clean, polite and friendly, most importantly safe

Hotel is nice and clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Couple of small, easily fixable annoyances can make it a really great place. There was an smoke alarm with a low battery beeping constantly, and the pillows were extremely thick. Couple bucks could fix that and make your stay much more enjoyable, but we could not get a good rest. The street is noisy, but so is every street in historical Cuenca.

El hotel es bueno, limpio, bien ubicado y con el personal amable, excepto por uno de los recepcionistas que nos recibió que parecía que le molestaba que le hablen. Lamentablemente el hotel está mal administrado. El primer día no funcionó el inodoro, el segundo día no hubo agua caliente por un desperfecto en el Calefon y para encerrar como no hay personal suficiente el desayuno fue un desastre porque la pobre chica de la recepción tenía que al mismo tiempo ser cocinera, mesera y recepcionista. Como es posible sabiendo que están llenos no haya aparecido desde temprano la administradora para ayudar a su personal sabiendo que iba a ser un fin de semana complicado!!! Se supone que es 4 estrellas y la tarifa no es baja, deben asegurarse que la calidad de servicio sea buena! Estaban haciendo obras en la calle y no son capaces de poner una tabla para la entrada y salida de carros dejando que los carros se raspen al salir y entrar del parqueadero! Esos detalles cuentan y debe ser una administradora que debe estar pendiente de esas cosas. Difícil de recomendar por todos los inconvenientes que se tuvo.

La estadía fue genial, un hotel muy lindo y bueno y el servicio fue excelente.
