The hotel is boutique and artsy. It is very uniquely designed. However, don’t stay at this hotel if you are looking for quiet, comfort and service. The hotel is a 3-star at best. Our original reservation was with El Mercado but Mountain Lodges of Peru (the owner of XO and Mercado) moved us to XO Art House because the El Mercado closed-down at the last minute. The interior court yard is used for breakfast, group gatherings and evening meetings. It echoes. Some rooms are interior only and the windows overlook the courtyard - these rooms are very loud. If you book this hotel ensure your room has exterior windows - the road is a side street and quiet. We had an interior room and it was very loud. On one night we had no hot water for showering. It was very cold. Also, the heating in the room is not great and inadequate in the winter months. The breakfast buffet is very cold as it is served in an open air courtyard (8C to 10C in the morning). There is no room service for food/beverage. Please note there is no desk service after 6pm. You are in this hotel alone in the evenings and overnight. You have to call a local phone number for help but they are not prompt/responsive. For example, rhey didn’t return our message requesting help for the safe which was locked and unable to be used. There is a security guard after hours that controls access to the hotel, which you need to ring a door bell to get access. Side note: We were going to stay at this hotel after our trek/expedition, but on our return to Cusco we decided to stay at another hotel, despite having already pre-paid for the night.
