Residence Inn des Moines Downtown

Stay away for awhile. Under major construction. Water is hard and slimmy. Rooms, lobby are a mess. We have exposed electrical wires in our room. Breakfast was good. Service was hit or miss now I'm just writing to get to 200 characters. The weather was good and we enjoyed the state fair

Unprofessional gave us an occupied room and over charged my card, couldn't talk to nobody until the next day . They told us the issue would get resolved and it hasn’t. I came three hours away and was very disappointed i will not be staying there again!

This hotel is great! We only stayed for one night and didn't utilize some if the amenities but there is a lot offered. The lobby is nice and welcoming and our group of 8 was able to socialize there while watching the game on TV. Guest rooms were set up with a smart floorplan, which contained a small kitchen and spacious living area. It would definitely be a good place to stay for many days. Rooms were clean. We did not use the pool but it looked nice. Breakfast was great with much to choose from. One of the better selections I've seen at a hotel. Maranda was the clerk/receptionist and she was very attentive to the guests and seemed to like her job.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights while visiting family. We liked the location as it’s very convenient to downtown downtown Des Moines. It’s located next to the Saturday Farmers Market and several good restaurants (e.g. Hessen Haus) and bars (e.g. El Bait Shop). Train noise could be a problem but I only heard it once at night. The rooms are very nice and spacious. There are televisions in the living room and the bedroom. Our bathroom could have been a little better, though. The shower/tub was dated looking and the door wouldn’t close without a major push. Parking is a bit of a hassle and costs $15. The parking lot is next to the hotel in the back. It has a separate elevator but it can be a hike to your room as the floors are very long. Breakfast was the best feature of the hotel. It is much better than what you get at an average Residence Inn. Among other things they have several excellent hot dishes, make-your-own waffles with a wide variety of toppings, several different hot sauces and salsas, and very good bagels. We liked the place and will likely stay here on future visits to Des Moines.

This was one of the worse stays I have had with Marriott. The hotel is located within 25 feet of an active railroad track that runs in front of the hotel. The train goes by all times of the night and the horn kept me from getting a decent night's rest. In addition there was a continual knocking of pipes in the hotel. 24/7. When I inquired the maintenance person indicated it was the A/C. Seriously??? There was snow on the ground. Not planning to visit this site again.

Stayed here with work- large work group. The hotel took great care of us. The asst manager working most nights was friendly- on top of things- and went out of his way to be a great host. The location was perfect to where we needed to walk for work- simple walk to many great restaurants- and a grocery store just minutes away by foot as well. If I back around the area- I will definitely be back.

Nice location close to the river. The room was very comfortable and well designed for suitcase access. Full kitchen. Breakfast is included and was superior to many others. Parking is $15 a night, but easy access to hotel directly. Would definitely stay here again.

I am sad to write this critical review of this property. I've stayed here before, like the location, and as a top tier Marriott Bonvoy member I'm a big fan of the Residence Inn format for long stays. Unfortunately there were a few significant problems. Hygiene was 1st issue - staff was not following Marriott policies shown on the Marriott TV channel in the room - staff not wearing masks (including housekeeping staff I encountered), only 1 hand sanitizer station in entire hotel - this during flu season, covid still spreading, and very cold time withe everyone indoors. 2nd - room had multiple broken items. 3rd - guest laundry facilities had multiple broken machines. There are more issues I could list - but you get the idea. I emailed a member of hotel staff, who responded and said I would hear from general manager - after a follow-up and a couple of weeks, no word. So I sent complaint to Marriott corporate, who said case was opened and hotel would get involved to respond - and after a couple of weeks - nothing. So unfortunately the company managing this property doesn't seem to care about the issues. I will avoid this propertyuntil seeing evidence they have turned it around.

We visited Des Moines after buying a truck nearby in Clive. The downtown area seemed to offer what we were looking for during a Saturday night and all within walking distance. Good eats, drinks and TVs for football. Hotels in the area are mid-priced and we felt like this was a good deal at $130.00 plus a $15.00 parking fee. First, my husband went in to check rates and there wasn’t anyone at the front desk but a phone number was present. So he called and then returned inside. We parked and travelled the maze to walk to our room. We actually found it humorous how it’s all laid out. I even asked, “Did we just run a marathon?”….lol! We opened the door to the room and surprised at the large size. Cool..we thought. It is modern but could use some updating. A plug in alarm clock? The toilet didn’t flush and luckily my husband knew how to fix it. The temperature was adjustable but apparently did not work. Lordy it was hot during sleep. We asked questions before making the short walk to downtown. Staff was friendly with good suggestions. One staff member wasn’t sure so it might be good for her to get educated about the area. After a long hot sleepless night we arrived downstairs in time for breakfast. It was just okay but clean. Then, as I walked out of the breakfast area to a table a mouse darted in front of me. I alerted the staff but no one seemed to feel they needed to do anything? Maybe a scene was what they were avoiding and will set traps later? I did notice small bites on my right wrist and left hand. I sure hope there weren’t bed bugs in our bed? It is winter, so I’m positive they aren’t bites from walking outdoors to the downtown area. We also noticed the front desk clerk from the previous day had her own dogs at the hotel? She had them outside and then returned them to a room where she stayed in the room. Maybe she was walking a guests dogs? I guess it’s not our business but seemed odd. We are not extra picky people and usually just go with the flow. The staff was all friendly but the hotel needs some attention to detail. We will likely avoid staying here again. As they say, “you get what you pay for”. Marriott properties are usually very nice and well appointed. This one is just so-so and heading downhill.
