We booked a luxury balcony room at St Michael's for the 2 nights after our wedding, we hoped would be a real treat for us. Sadly the room didn't live up to expectations or the description of luxury. The room was very cramped, there were patches of flaking paintwork, areas which were thick with dust, stains on upholstery and the room and balcony were very overlooked by people/cars on the road/pavement outside - would be so much nicer if this was fenced off. Looking out over the balcony onto an unpainted rear access (see photos) and an unloved area with semi-assembled hammocks. The complimentary biscuits were in a filthy jar which had obviously just been topped up between guests, not cleaned. The food was hit and miss. On the first day, breakfast was really perfect we couldn't fault it. But day 2, eggs were hard, bacon was described by partner as 'like chewing on somebody's ear' and the buffet wasn't being topped up so everything was running empty. The couple next to us were commenting on how their order had been missed, and we had to chase our drinks at the end of breakfast as still not received our teas. The female breakfast staff were very friendly and welcoming, so that was nice. And the spa was clean and looked after. The room and outlook really let it down for us and we've stayed in (much) cheaper spa hotels with better kept rooms and more consistent food. As a separate note, we've never stayed in a spa hotel where the spa facilities have to be paid for as a separate cost (£80) on top of the room cost and limited to 2 hours use. Our fault for not reading the smallprint, but we did enjoy the spa, was just a shame to be time limited and the extra cost. On check out they were having computer issues and were struggling to take our final payment. We didn't feel able to share how our stay was as they were dealing with other things. But on reflection, we should have given feedback then. Although it would have been a little embarrassing to be reeling off a list.
