I like to think I’m a pretty lenient person. I can look past the rusty kettle or broken toilet seat/toilet paper holder. The lack of microwave and utensils and hand soap and other core basics. I’m no stranger to cheaper places to stay and as long as the place is comfortable, I don’t mind some hiccups. But I draw the line at bedbugs. And draw ANOTHER line at cruel and unsympathetic business owners. My friend and I stayed in a room with two beds for the weekend, one queen, one single. My friend woke with a couple bites on their arms and legs. Initially we thought these were mosquito bites, however as the day went on and the bites settled they were clearly trademark bedbug bite patterns. We called reception and one of the staff (NOT the owner) was incredibly apologetic, but clearly was not trained at all in how to deal with the situation, as he sounded panicked that we had called after cleaners had left for the day. When we got back to the hotel, we spoke with him in person and were given new sheets to change ourselves, and ended up staying in the same room again another night. We changed the sheets and checked everything best we could, and my friend and I swapped beds so they could hopefully get some sleep. My friend woke up the next day with more bites on their back, and while searching for some jewellery that had gone missing from the room the night before (suspected stolen during cleaning but I don’t have solid evidence), I found a bedbug and promptly killed it. We had to leave for a work event but after talking with the owner on the phone, when we got back he had a new room sorted for us. He gave us a bedbug specific spray and we positively DOUSED all of our belongings with it and shook out/thoroughly investigated all of our clothes and bags before moving to the new room. The next morning we BOTH woke up with new bites still, and ended up leaving that morning (thankfully it was our last night there anyway). A phonecall to the owner later that day had him try to accuse us of being the ones to bring the bugs in, which I may have given some thought if not for the fact that we were unbelievably thorough when moving our belongings, and also kept our baggage in the bathroom in this new space, limiting opportunities for bugs to transfer over. The phonecall started to get heated when requested compensation, and also I brought up reviews of previous bedbug experiences (he had said they’d only ever had bedbugs once before in the history of the motel, and there were at least three other reports), claiming that the health inspectors had come in and given the place the all clear. Not appreciating being yelled at, I hung up. He then CALLED ME BACK, asked angrily if I’d hung up on him, and insisted that he had a certificate that the place was clear of bedbugs. I stated he had my phone and email, so could he please send me a photo of this certificate. I was met with a ‘f*** off then’ and was hung up on. My memory isn’t clear on the exact o
