High Peaks Hotel

Generally clean. Nice large room with fridge and TV, although only half the channels worked. No microwave which should be included as the restaurant appears to be indefinitely closed. There are several restaurants near which are good. Very quite location so overall a good stay. Only way onto glacier is by helicopter which is costly.

Feel like whole place just belongs to us to stay 😁😁😁

Not a welcoming hotel at all. Lady on reception was OK. Gave us the key to our room. Our room was very smelly. Smelt very musty and damp. When told about it she just put some spray around the room. To be offered another room would have bn nice. On 2 rooms were occupied. Reception all closed up at 5.30 pm but outside door left open to reception. Not very safe for guests. Grounds very unkept. Broken down pipes, restaurant that wasn't open. Certainly not worth $150 night. Glad it was only 1 night. Definitely won't be staying here again. Part refund would be good 🤣🤣🤣🤣

on first arrival looked nothing great, very derelict looking from outside, the reception was manned by a young lady, very polite . our room was clean tidy and the bed comfy, but as somebody stated previously we only had half a toilet roll, good job we only stayed 1 night, very strange place, reception all shuttered up early evening with a note for somebody who was due to arrive later. had to go out to our car at 1 point, spooky to say the least, front sliding door left unlocked all the time. view from room was bad, derelict buildings, when we left we just had to leave key in a box and leave door unlocked..... wouldn't stay again in hindsight.

Absolutely horrible. We arrived after hours and our key was waiting at reception which was good. We found room comfortable and clean. The issue was we had a small amount of toilet paper and no new roll on our room anywhere. We waited until morning and when looked reception was open but no one was there. We phoned the numbers provided and no answer we left messages and sent emails and still no response. We finally had a roll placed at our door after 2 nights. It was like a ghost town even during office hours and they didn’t even answer the after hours phone. Very glad we didn’t have some type of emergency.

This place claims to be a Hotel. Sorry it is not it is a Motel. When we drove in it looked like it was not operating. Run down weeds been growing for some time in the drive, broken drain pipes dilapidated feel. Their was a receptionist and we received our room key, and sleep quality was fine and as it was 2km out of township was fairly quiet, and also a good location to explore Lake Matheson.

We stayed here one night. Franz Josef Glacier is a nicer place to stay, but we wanted to be positioned at Fox Glacier so we were better positioned to do the early morning walk to Lake Matheson. Many of the accommodation options in Fox are closed due to COVID, others seemed to me to be ridiculously expensive. This place looked okay on paper. I booked on line. When we arrived our first impression was that it was closed. The entrance looks unkempt and the car park area is full of weeds. However there was a woman behind the reception counter. The first thing she wanted was for me to pay in cash, because their eftpos machine was not working. Needless to say I did not have enough cash - who carries much cash around these days? I asked her if there was an ATM in town, but she did not know. I logged onto their wi-fi to find for myself that there is no ATM in Fox Glacier, the nearest being in Franz Josef. We were not driving back to Franz Josef to get some cash! On reflection, at this point, I should have said we would go elsewhere, but instead I offered to try and get some cash out in the town in conjunction with buying a meal. We were allowed to drop our gear in the room and we drove back into town (hotel is a little distance outside the township). Not many options for a meal, but we found a very decent burger and chips at a cafe. But they could not provide me with the amount of cash I needed for the hotel. Back to the hotel, to be told the eftpos had been fixed - presumably by the guy we saw arriving as we left to go back into town. So we paid for the room and settled in for an early night. We were the only occupants. The owners/operators didn't appear to live on site, so we must have been the only people in the building overnight. There was absolutely no sign of life and it was a bit spooky. They did not provide any phone number to contact anyone if we had a problem. The rooms are nice enough - spacious and comfortable, with everything you need. There was mould on the curtains. The hotel restaurant is of course closed at the moment, thanks to COVID. Reception hours were something like 9am to 7pm. We left in the morning about 7.30am. Not a soul to be seen. We left our room key in the box on the reception counter, unlocked the main door to leave the building and departed. Had to leave the door unlocked. This was not a pleasant experience, but I am sure it would have been better if things had been "normal", and COVID was not hurting everything. We would definitely not consider returning to this hotel.
