The Cliff Bay - PortoBay

This is, without doubt an amazing hotel. We were lucky enough to stay here for a week & I'm not surprised most of the other guests were returning customers. (We will be too!) The hotel accommodation was excellent, & all the hotel staff we had contact with were very efficient & friendly. Just what you need. Our room was a twin with sea & bay view, & a balcony, which we used most evenings. It was stunning to wake up & see the view every morning, & again in the evening while sitting out, enjoying a drink before going to bed. The breakfast selection was excellent, with something for everyone. The lady who cooks the eggs is a long standing member of staff, I noticed her being treated like an old friend by regular visitors. She is lovely, & my morning request of poached egg was always delivered with a smile. We stayed in one evening to listen to the jazz group who were very entertaining, & on the Sunday afternoon, while we had afternoon tea, we were entertainined by a lovely female singer & musician. I used the pool three times, usually in the evening when it was quiet, & it was lovely. The changing rooms, etc, were always spotless. Definitely a hotel that puts the customer at the heart of its operation, & it felt so good to be spoilt. The hotel is quite a walk from the town centre, but the bus stop is at the top of the road the hotel is on, (on the main road,) so it's easy to get in & out of the town. We walked into town, or took a taxi using the Bolt app, & used the bus or taxi for our return. Next time I think we'll get a bus ticket for the week, & save our legs! If you want a beautiful hotel room, with staff who put customer service highest on the list, stay here. You will not be disappointed.

This hotel oozes luxury, the beds and pillows are the comfiest I have ever slept in. The room I got was a sea view and let me tell you the view was just perfect and calming. The staff at this hotel can't do enough for you, they are so friendly and attentive, housekeeping are very regular and on top of everything. Beautiful location, amazing facilities. The only thing I found different was some of the outside restaurants didn't open until 6pm so getting lunch nearby wasn't as easy as I thought , but the hotel has rslestaurants that can be booked or the blue lagoon that doesn't require a booking can be accessed between 12 and 5pm and room service is also on hand. All in all a fabulous holiday for me and my son and we will definitely be back.

We understand why everyone you meet at the hotel keeps coming back. This is our 3rd stay and our second in an Atlantic suite. The Atlantic suite was again beautiful, a huge bed for me and my wife, a huge sofa bed for our son and a cot for our daughter. The suite is super spacious and a lovely bottle of champagne in the room for arrival for our honeymoon. The views of Funchal from our balcony were beautiful. Breakfast was again beautiful and something we always looked forward to. We often requested a table outside and sometimes had to wait but never more than 5 minutes. The quality of the food is outstanding. With the Atlantic Suite we had access to il Gallo d'oro which we went to a couple of times. It's nice to be waited on here and the eggs Benedict were great along with the French toast. Definitely worth a visit. The hotel itself is very clean with rooms cleaned to a great standard daily. The pool areas are fantastic and the staff at poolside cannot do enough for you. Our kids loved all of the pools and staff were again, really great with our children. We loved going into the sea to view all of the wonderful fish and the lifeguards are extremely helpful and very knowledgeable of the sea life which was very interesting for our son. As mentioned in other comments, what sets this hotel above others is the staff. All super friendly and will go out of their way to help you. All staff are very considerate and interact lovely with all of the children. Despite visiting in the school holidays the hotel never appears busy and there are always plenty of sun beds. CANNOT recommend this hotel enough.

We had another lovely stay and the staff as ever attentive and friendly as ever.However,I had to bring their attention to the inefficient air-conditioning.In spite of my best efforts the temperature in the room stayed around 22c.I was advised that a card could stay in the electric box permanently, to close curtains when leaving the room and to close the internal door...they checked and couldn't find any malfunction and that air was entering the room at 18c and rising to 22c.due to high external temperatures.The pigeon problem remains.I still regard this as a great hotel due mainly to the staff.

We just spent two weeks at the Cliff Bay for our honeymoon and what a hotel it is. On check in, we were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine. Unfortunately there was no room upgrade, which we were advised was an option for honeymooners where available. We were however given a room with two stunning balconies, one to the side with a view of Funchal and one to the front with a sea view, and sparkling wine, chocolates and flowers in the room. Bedroom was nice with a very comfortable bed, especially once we upgraded our pillows to firmer ones. The only issue we had was it wasn't very sound proof and we could regularly hear doors closing on the corridor and noise from the room next door. The water was refreshed every day and the housekeeping were thorough attending to the room multiple times a day. Unfortunately our mini bar was not complimentary. The bathroom was lovely and clean, with his and hers sinks, a shower & separate bath and a bidet. Only criticism of the bathroom is the shower door opens both ways and opens inwards when you're using the shower, and the shower could use a shelf for toiletries rather than having to put these on the floor. I imagine for older guests this would be difficult. Breakfast had a variety of cooked and continental options, the highlight for us was the omelette making section where a chef cooks these fresh for you. We also loved being able to sit outside with a view of the sea. The hotel offers two separate pool areas, one connected to the spa and one next to the sea, as well as sea access monitored by a lifeguard. One change we would suggest is making one of the pool areas adults only for guests wanting to separate and relax away from kids playing. The inside spa area was beautiful and we found this was a great escape from the busyness of other areas in the hotel. It has a chemotherapy shower, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, and there are a variety of beauty and spa treatments available. I had a massage which was just perfect. The location of this hotel is the highlight for us. It is situated right on the seafront with amazing views, we loved watching the boats go by. It is out of the hustle and bustle due to being down a hill, but there's a huge variety of bars and restaurants in walking distance and the Old Town is only about 30 minutes walk too. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful; a special shoutout to the ladies on reception the day my husband fractured his elbow. They were great at advising us of the best hospital to attend, providing ice packs, and even phoning the room to check if we needed anything. We were able to request a slightly later checkout time of 2pm due to our flight being later in the day which was nice. Overall, we loved our time at The Cliff Bay and would love to return in the future.

This hotel was the reason why we wanted to go to Madeira to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Wow, one of the best hotels that we've ever stayed at and we travel quite a lot! A 5-star experience at a fairly reasonable price. We loved the breakfast buffet (which was included), the sea access, the indoor pool, spa treatment, and the excellent customer service. The family room was spacious with views of the sea.

Spent a week in the magnificent Peninsula Suite at the Cliff Bay Hotel in Funchal, Madeira. Third time in this hotel but first time in the suite. The hotel is lovely, the staff are really friendly and helpful and the views are fantastic. The Rose Garden restaurant was ok but not too special when there are laods of great place to eat within walking distance. The Avista on the other hand was devine, fabulous food and service - not cheap bit worth it for a special treat. The Peninsula Suite is probably the best hotel room I've ever stayed in. One bedroom, two full bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, and three balconies. The hotel arrange pick from the airport which was nice but the tranfer from the hotel back to the airport was really impressive and seamless.

Pretty hotel. Good pool. Horrible breakfast at the Rose Garden. Shower leaked so bad, bathroom floor flooded with every shower. Hotel staff made no effort to correct or compensate. Plenty of other hotels on the *****. Will not stay here again.

Here for a special birthday and what a fabulous time we had. Upgraded to junior suite with balcony overlooking the sea, absolutely stunning view.There was wine, fruit and chocolates in our room on arrival after fizz when checking in, what lovely little touches. Hotel is immaculate, staff were all so friendly. We ate in Rose garden restaurant and I ate from vegetarian menu which was so good hubby even tried a few dishes. The food was excellent with very good wine selection too, staff in restaurant were so attentive. Pools were lovely with water aerobics twice each week with really good instructor. I was thoroughly spoiled by hotel on my birthday, champagne the night before then prosecco and a beautiful chocolate cake on the afternoon all left in our room. We had an absolutely amazing time loved every minute of it.
