We had a lovely roast dinner for Father’s Day! The meats were perfect, plenty of veg and all the trimmings. Good selection of draft beers and a fab wine list. Your traditional country pub, cosy, overlooking rolling countryside. They also have rooms.

Pub/hotel under new ownership and we found the atmosphere and service to be both friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our brief stay in a comfortable room overlooking farm fields behind the pub and our evening meal was very good, with the best steak we have had in a long while.

Love this pub, super great location, very picturesque, amazing views front and back, pub itself is beautiful, decor is fabulous, food is fantastic and the atmosphere always has a great vibe, great service, my new favourite local, wonderful country pub

We stayed in the Thomas Gainsborough suite & it was lovely. Had a lovely meal & the breakfast was very good too. Great place to escape to in a beautiful rural area just outside Braintree. Diana the owner as well as Amy one of the staff members were very hospitable & couldn’t do enough for you. Would recommend to friends & family.

Just love to stay in pubs like this full of old world charm.
The Gainsborough room was excellent.
Would just say though that drinks a bit on the expensive side for a pub

We stayed in the Captain Oates Room for 2 nights so we could attend a wedding at Hedingham Castle and I can't recommend enough. We arrived just before 8pm and were greeted by the landlady who was very accommodating. The room was absolutely lovely and had everything we needed. Separate shower and bath, which was brilliant for my young son who prefers baths. Breakfast was beautiful the next morning. Upon opening the fridge to get milk for my cup of tea that the jug had fallen over. I informed the landlady and just as I was getting ready to leave a lovely lady knocked on the door with a fresh jug of milk and said that she would clean the fridge. When I say lovely lady, she was genuinely just the nicest person, so friendly and chatty, even advised me when I asked her if I had my fascinator on properly. Then when at home, my husband got a call, I hadn't even realised that I'd left a ring in the room, but they kept it safe for me until it could be collected. I'd definitely return and highly recommend.

Stayed in our campervan in field opposite. Greeted by Diane who was very polite and friendly. Evening meal was absolutely delicious, one of the best meals out for a long time. Starters of camembert and prawns amazing. Mains of steak and burger cooked perfectly and again, very tasty. Highly recommend going here as a stopover or if you need a room. Diane and staff lovely people. Thankyou.

A very well appointed room with lovely views across the countryside and an extremely comfortable bed. Diana's attention to detail is second to none and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay. We hope to have the opportunity to return in the near future.

A warm and friendly welcome from the staff and the location is very peaceful and picturesque. Diana and her team really look after you. The views from the rooms are lovely too, overlooking local farms, fields and forests. A highly recommended location and we will be returning for sure
