Having spent 3 entirely satisfactory nights in The Premier Inn in Seaton Devon I had looked for somewhere a bit more “special” for an overnight stay on our way back to Cumbria. Whilst the building looks a bit like the website the latter must have been taken by an estate agent, it definitely made the best of it. Parking in the layby outside the hotel and unloading we went into the pub bar….OK its a pub! The staff had difficulty finding our key and the code for the “residents entrance”, eventually we were led to our room…….after they had found the key for the door giving access to the stairs, which smelled between musty and something dead we struggled up long, narrow stairs to our room which was small and cleanish but very dated, with a “lovely” view of back yards and the local spray shop. We went out for a meal and on our return popped into the bar to ask if the £99 we had prepaid covered breakfast…..It did not and no they couldn’t really do breakfast, but they could put a few bits in a box for us, for a further £7.50. We made our displeasure known but got no form of apology or offer of compensation. We returned to our room not liking the idea of staying overnight….the stairs still smelled awful! I went on line and booked a night in a Premier Inn, including continental breakfast for the princely sum of £71, we repacked and left, via the residents entrance, leaving the key in the room door, not wanting to have a confrontation with the staff in the bar downstairs and without much hope of getting any money back. What should have been a special stay was only saved by getting the night at the Premier Inn and at the loss of £99. We will not be back at The Linden Tree and suggest that you don’t even consider it for an overnight stay.
