The Tontine Hotel

Stayed in the hotel a year ago to visit family for the long weekend and decided to do the same again this year and I was lucky enough to be put in one of their newly reburnished rooms. WOW! What a difference. From the last time I stayed the bathroom grout was a bit grubby and it looked like from other reviews I wasn't the only one with that experience but during the time I was staying the bathroom looked like it had been refreshed and I saw workmen in some of the other rooms on my floor, which I'm assuming why there was a skip outside my window. Thankfully they weren't too noisy and were only working during the day.. Honestly I'm happy to see they are giving the rooms a much more modern feel and actually listening to the reviews people have left. Staff are as friendly as always with nothing being any hassle ! Knew my name by the second night which was nice they were actually interested in listening to their guests and not just there for the job alone. Always such a homely feel when I visit, you can definitely tell its a family run hotel. Will be back again :)

Our first stay here for some 20 years. The staff on arrival were very pleasant and we went up to our room. What a disappointment, mould all round the shower base and up the tiles, extractor not working, no towel rail. The furnishings in the room were very dated and marked and the carpet was thread bare in places. I was going to ask for a different room but my wife said she couldn't cope with the stress. (We were up here for her mothers funeral) so we put up with it. The breakfast was OK nice and hot and a reasonable choice. The lady in charge of breakfast was really nice and understanding. One last thing. Please use bar personnel that know what different spirits are. I asked for an ARMAGNAC and he had no clue what it was. Also, when I said I'll just have normal brandy, he had to go and get someone to show him which it was. Not the best service. I mentioned the state of the room to reception on checkout and she said we are updating a lot of rooms, maybe this could have been mentioned at check in.

Nice hotel, decent drinks service and fairly speedy at the bar. Food was ok too, just a tip, looks like chef needs a new set of whites and serving cloth that was dishing out the steak pie buffet. Either that or he’s had a hard shift! Anyway will be back,

I suspect management do not read these reviews as I notice that a previous reviewer also noted the mould in the bathroom back in April in Room 25 and nothing has been done about. This is ongoing maintenance and shouldn’t be awaiting a full refurbishment although these rooms are badly needing refurbed. I mentioned the mould to the receptionist on checkout so hopefully they will get rid of it as gives a very bad impression and is of course unhealthy. As a native of Greenock I am very familiar with the Tontine and have stayed in many of the rooms over the years however it is sad to see it starting to look very uncared for and getting run down in places. GOOD POINTS Great location Plenty of free parking Staff very friendly Breakfast is ok - not the best quality and had to ask for items which had run out. Nobody seemed to be checking this. Decent bar and bar food BAD POINTS Bathroom and parts of room had terrible mould - see photos Room felt cold and damp Couldn’t get heating to come on Decor very tired and dated. Lots of dust in radiator Room needs a deep clean Please please get better pillows and duvets - have never seen such thin pillows. I wasn’t expecting. 5 star - I know it is a 3 star hotel but no excuse for neglect. they really need to up their game - they have probably got complacent due to lack of competition in Greenock. I really want to love staying here as visit Greenock often and it used to be the place to go. Had both my parents funeral teas here and many dinners over the years so feel sad at writing this review. I understand they have new management team in place although owners are the same. Hoping they will look at it with fresh eyes and upgrade to expectations of customers today. Hoping my comments will be taken as constructive criticism and I hope things will improve moving forward.

This is the first time I have stayed at this hotel although I have eaten there and attended a funeral repast there. There have been renovations done in the hotel room bathrooms that seen unfinished. There are no grab bars in the bathrooms for people who may need assistance. There is no shelf or basket hanging from the showerhead to keep your shampoo, etc. while in the shower. Other than this the beds were comfortable and the room clean. The pillows are terrible.

The Tontine went above and beyond to make our wedding day everything we wanted and more, from regular meetings to answering my 100,000 questions throughout they made the whole process an absolute breeze, we cannot recommend them enough!! Amazing food, the best service and an absolutely stunning venue.

We ended up staying here for 5 nights - it’s a great hotel with real character. All the staff were fabulous - we kept having to extend our stay and the receptionist were excellent in sorting out rooms at short notice. Rooms were very clean and reasonable sized. Food was also excellent - as was the service in the restaurant (and all the bar staff). Hotel is centrally located with a useful taxi booking system at reception. Would highly recommend!

Had our wedding here. From the start of our wedding planning right till the end of the day at our wedding. Staff friendly and amazing food outstanding and great quality. Everyone was saying how great it was. Stayed in the bridal suite room 6 lovely. Thanks again for making our day special .

Thank you for a wonderful stay. I visited both as a guest and using one of the function rooms for a family wake. Thanks to the staff the event was handled sensitively and well catered, plus they went the extra mile to fetch special drinks requests from the downstairs bar. They were also very patient with the one child in our party who was in high spirits (it was more of an adult hotel but she was made to feel welcome). Ate dinner in the bar twice and food was incredible. One thing I would say is rooms slightly in need of a makeover, a bit well worn and could do with more sockets. Could not fault customer service or overall experience though. Thank you for a lovely stay. Will come again.
