We did not stay at the Riad , but chose to stay at their remote Luxury Camp in the desert , after taking an unforgettable and thrilling 45 minute camel ride through the Sahara's 600 foot tall sand dunes....truly a unique experience! (While driving through Todra Gorges, on our way to Merzouga, we each bought our head scarf and were glad we did , since our ride into the desert was windy and the turbans were important to help keep the sand out of our ears, nose and mouths!) Hassan -- our camel guide-- is an outstanding ambassador to the Sahara Desert and he is a very creative and talented photographer as you can tell from some of the photos attached. We could tell from talking with him , that this land is in his blood through and through...he is as authentic and real as anyone can be! Everything about this 24 hour experience was surreal... in an awesome way! Our sleeping tent/cabin was basic and comfortable. Our dinner, served in the "sultan tent" was delicious. We were served very enjoyable baked zucchini strips with melted cheese as a starter and then very tasty chicken and beef with french fries and a large , fresh fruit platter for desert. (Bring your own wine if you are interested since they do not serve it here). After dinner, in the open air pavilion, under the stars, the team that worked at the camp all got together to sing traditional Moroccan songs while performing a lovely drumming concert. At the end , they each broke off into small groups to teach all of us (the guests) how to drum and we even all broke out into Queen's, "We Will Rock You"...thanks to Hassan's fun sense of humor and talent! Now that we are back home, we enjoy looking at our jar full of the "clay colored" Sahara Desert sand that we brought home to always remember this unforgettable day and night!
