To call the Monadnock Inn a dump is an insult to dumps. Located in a lovely rural setting near Mt. Monadnock, this place appears to have been a stately bed and breakfast at one time, but that time was eons ago. Driving up, the total lack of maintenance was obvious, with peeling paint, loose shutters, weedy lawn, and stacks of pallets on the wraparound porch. No one was there to greet us. Instead, there was a hand-written note (the most personal attention we got the whole stay) that told us that our room was on the 3rd floor and that the bath across from it was our private bath. It appeared that we were the only guests in the whole place. The room was tiny and poorly appointed...a lumpy double bed that squeaked every time we moved, and almost no room to move around at all. Since we were the ONLY people there, you'd think they could have at least given us a larger room. The bathroom sink was just the right size for a kindergartner, and the faucet was so low, I couldn't fill a water glass for a drink. The good news: no bugs in the room...that we know of so far, that is. We would have turned around and walked away, but were leaving from Boston early the next day and were just too tired to continue on. Take it from my husband and me, you do NOT want to stay at the Monadnock Inn, not ever! I'm not a fan of cheap chain motels, but at least they have a human being at a desk to greet you and comfortable beds and decent bathrooms for their guests.
