THE GOOD: The hotel is a quite far from the park and local attractions, but is near a quaint little area with local shops and restaurants. The room and facilities appear quite new, seem generally well-maintained, and are quite spacious. This was the biggest positive for this hotel.
THE BAD: The "ok" score for cleanliness is because, despite its attractive appearance, the hotel reeks of cigarette smoke. When we asked the front desk staff to confirm that this was a non-smoking hotel, she said "yes," while both of us stared at the man smoking up a storm in the middle of the hotel lobby. Unfortunately the corridors, rooms, and restaurant weren't any better, where guests are encouraged to smoke openly.
This first lady at check-in was fairly friendly and professional, but the front desk staff generally seemed inhospitable and impatient towards foreigners. We specifically requested a "quiet" room, due to us traveling with a child, and us being light sleepers. We were given a room directly in front of the stairwell, and were woken all night by the metal doors repeatedly and loudly slamming from the stairwell, literally shaking our room each time. The next morning, we politely requested (again) to be moved to a quieter area AWAY from the stairwell.
Although she seemed irritated, this other front desk staff member assigned us a new room. When we walked arrived at the new room we immediately realized that she had given us ANOTHER room directly in front of the stairwell. It wasn't clear whether there was some sort of translation issue here, so we took the initiative to locate another available room ourselves that was down the hall. Since we had already gone up and down the hotel several times at this point, we wanted to check the room first before needing to haul our luggage back up once more. It was slightly humorous, but still inappropriate that this staff member physically pushed us and our luggage towards the elevator, to rid us from the lobby. This impatience was strange, since we very politely and quietly requested one simple reasonable request (a room away from the stairwell).
Although staff at the hotel restaurant were mostly friendly and helpful, one short-haired slim lady in black was quite impatient and rude to us. The first night, she was already irritated by our inability to speak Mandarin Chinese - we asked her just a few questions, and politely requested a few minutes so we could translate the menu using our phones. Two nights later upon our return, she much more visibly expressed annoyance over just two questions we asked using our translation app. She rolled her eyes, face-palmed, audibly huffed and puffed, stomped her feet, and gestured towards another server about how annoyed she was apparently feeling.
Based on this reaction, we could tell this place doesn't receive many foreign guests - it's not clear what she expected here, for us to just immediately and randomly choose items on the menu, and hope for the best? I don't think this was a cultural thing, as no other server that waited on us throughout the trip acted this way.
SUMMARY: Beautiful and spacious hotel with a nice local charm, but the smoke is an issue, and a few rude and impatient staff members. If you are mainland-Chinese, who can read/speak Mandarin and are used to the endless cigarette smoke, this hotel may be great for you. If you're a foreigner who doesn't speak Mandarin, and/or care about second-hand smoke for yourself or kids, this place isn't for you.
