The Notary's House

We stayed in the Deluxe room in The Notary's House as the first part of our honeymoon and without a doubt this was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Mr. Somaratne and his staff are simply incredible. The Notary's House has absolutely breathtaking views over the lake/water and the colonial architecture and decor was beautiful and sensitively perfected. Furthermore the massive garden around the bungalow was a work of art and really stood out. The atmosphere is one of home away from home and the staff.

We had a wonderful stay at the Notery House, our first stop in Sri Lanka. It is located about 30 minutes from CMB airport. Our stay was perfect. The staff was kind and helpful. The food was terrific, and the hospitality was impressive. We felt like royalty during our stay. The staff assisted my husband in Bird sighting and gave us a tour of their beautiful organic gardens. I can highly recommend this lovely place.

Notary’s house was the best we stayed in during our 2 week trip to Sri Lanka. 😊 We had a 2 night stay after arriving at Colombo airport from the United Kingdom. A beautiful property in colonial style. Large clean stylish very comfortable air conditioned rooms with private bathrooms and balconies overlooking beautiful grounds. Lovely pool in a secluded section of the immaculately kept garden overlooking lake (actually a man made ‘tank’) Listening to the wonderful birdsong and insects especially in the mornings and evenings was such a treat. The staff were fantastic, attentive and hard working. The manager was so lovely. Always helpful and keen to explain the food and anything to do with the property and surrounding area. We borrowed bikes (not the best quality - only two functioning gears - but they were good enough!!) to explore the local area which was fun - don’t think the locals are too used to tourists on bikes!! 🤣 We attracted a lot of friendly attention!! The food was amazing - possibly the best during our stay. Freshly cooked and very very tasty. Different fruit juices to try every day. They catered for our European palate regarding spice levels but flavour was not compromised. They will cook western food if you prefer. The western breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend this hotel.

This beautiful hotel is situated in a stunning rural location with a lovely garden next to a lake teeming with wildlife. A beautifully appointed boutique hotel with private grounds and a swimming pool, it was the perfect place to spend two nights after a long flight and before our return flight at the end of our trip. The hotel has six spacious, well-appointed rooms with large, comfortable beds and excellent en-suite facilities. The expansive garden and picturesque lake in front provide a comfortable and relaxing environment after a long journey. The hotel offers a great introduction to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine with its vast range of dishes. Exploring the nearby village and temple is definitely worth the walk, especially with a knowledgeable team member from the Notary House, who provides an enriching experience of Sri Lankan culture.

Beautiful property. Very comfortable, everything clean and staff exceptionally helpful & friendly. The property is a wonderful historic house that has been maintained to a high standard. The pool is in a cracking position and overlooks the beautiful lake. The food is really good and the property gardens are on an impressively beautiful lake. Bird lovers paradise! We inly stayed 1 night but would have enjoyed longer for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature.

Wonderful hotel with such friendly staff. Couldn’t do enough for us & made our stay feel extra special decorating our room for our honeymoon. The food was absolutely incredible, homemade & delicious! Our room was huge & we loved the walk in double shower. The hotel grounds & pool were immaculately well looked after, located in such a peaceful place overlooking a lake. We had to leave very early in the morning to catch our flight & they got up early for us and sent us on our way with breakfast & so kindly gave me a book I had been reading the evening before. This is a very special place with warm, kindhearted people. We only wish we could have stayed longer! Daisy & Todd
