The dirt road from Calitzdorp was a bit hair raising driving in the rain, but it was worth it to get to this gem of a retreat. This is an appealing spot if you want to get away from it all and be alone in nature. Our cottage was spacious and comfortable and we could sit outside on our stoep and just tune in to the world around us. Lots of birds and a few animals like zebra, although we didn‘t see them. Unfortunately, we didn‘t have great weather on our first day, but we had a lovely walk on our second day when it cleared up. The hiking trails are well marked out and there are some spectacular views of the surrounds. The breakfast and dinner provided was ample and the food was good, and it was nice to sit around the long table and talk to the other guests. Erika was very welcoming and informed about the area. All in all a very enjoyable sojourn.

Wonderful peace and quiet with a lovely room and excellent meals. Meals are taken at a long table, and at breakfast you can watch the birds visiting the bird table. There are a number of spectacular hikes of different lengths from very short to mountain climbs. You can also walk to the rock pools, which aren’t a long way away. Whilst there is a pool and sunbeds, I had to swim in the dam which has a jetty and ladder to make access easy. The dam is a very short walk from the rooms.

We had the most relaxing stay at The Retreat. The environment is so peaceful and beautiful. The many walks along the river and on the mountain as well as along farm roads were wonderful. Marie and Erika are wonderful hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners were fabulous. We had all meals on the patio (stoep) overlooking the beautiful gardens and watching the birds eating. The meals were excellent. Our bedroom was large and very comfortable. There are many interesting places and art galleries, wine estates to visit in the valley. The awesome Swartberg Pass is close by. Thank you to Marie and Erika. We are able to recharge at your Retreat!

The Retreat at Geoenfontain is special. Nestled far back in the mountains of the Klein Karoo, you could not find a lovelier, more secluded spot in the middle of nature (26 km up a dirt road). - a perfect place to unwind. Great for hiking or walking on country roads. The accommodations are rustic and very comfortable. Our room had a fireplace which we used extensively because it was early spring and cold. Marie is a great host. All the guests eat dinner together around a common table but you can ask to eat privately if you wish. We enjoyed meeting and talking with other guests. Lots of Veggie options. Breakfasts are excellent but there is no lunch and nowhere to buy anything. Make sure your gas tank is not empty. The Retreat is solar powered so no appliances like air conditioning, electric kettles or hair dryers.

The Retreat is simply wonderful! Don't expect modern, contemporary, but if you enjoy a historic location, stunning scenery, incredible walks and hikes and wonderful food, all alongside the most amazing, friendly and intteresting host, then you will love it as much as we did!

What a delight to find this wonderful oasis in the Klein Karoo. The food was generous, delicious and very thoughtfully put together There are so many walking trails all over the farm, all clearly marked and catering for all activity levels. The gardens are full of indigenous plants and aloes, with many different kinds of trees. The bird life is abundant. We will definitely be returning and will stay for longer this time

A delightful holiday in a Karroo farmhouse. We were made to feel so welcome by our hostess. The meals were tasty and beautifully presented. The walks were spectacular. we will recommend it to all our friends.

We had an amazing stay at The Retreat at Groenfontein, even though it was just for one night. The beautiful swimming ponds (drinking water quality!) and well-designed hiking trails made our visit incredibly enjoyable. Dinner with Erika and Marie was delightful, featuring great food and wonderful company. We wish we could have stayed longer to soak in more of the serene atmosphere. Highly recommended!
