The Black Lion Royal Hotel

Very nice service from the waitress, the menu was fine although lots not available -it was a slow mid week night to be fair. I'd certainly go back as the prices were reasonable and seemed like a good choice for dinner.

Firstly the waitressing staff were very good and it’s a shame they will be negatively reflected in this rating, however there is absolutely no way this place could be rated higher than a single star. This was hands down some of the worst food I have ever eaten in a pub setting in my life. The starter was disgusting, tiny and hardly edible. The curry main course on the menu was described as being homemade with vegetables, what came on the plate was a tiny slop of plain curry from a jar with rock hard chicken and cold stodgy rice. And the prices?! Overpriced does not even come close. The proprietors should be ashamed of themselves charging for that. Do not waste your money.

I met a group of friends for an informal dinner at The Black Lion. It is a place that we have visited many, many times over the years. We were a little curious to see what the service would be like because we had learned that there was new management. However, we were all very happy with our meals and the service was excellent. The waitresses and waiter were all lovely. The meals were served in a timely manner and in a very professional way. One waitress was particularly helpful. Her name was Casey. She went out of her way to make sure that we were all happy. Bravo The Black Lion xxx

The public areas are excellent. Nice bar area and a great restaurant. The food (breakfast and dinner) was great and the waiting staff were friendly and efficient. The room we had was tiny and cold. Miniscule bathroom with a pitiful shower. Shabby, run down and very unattractive. Curtains hanging on by a thread. Such a shame that the accommodation didnt match the quality of the rest of the place.

Extremely disappointed with the obvious lack of customer service, particularly from the Manager. Stayed here for work in November 2024 and had a good experience until I realised I had left a pair of boots behind. I contacted them shortly after returning home and had an instant reply saying they would check for my boots, before confirming housekeeping had found them. They promised to send them back to me and I said I'd pay the postage. No boots so messaged again. Some poor excuse about not being able to get to the post office because of a storm was given, even though I know the post office is about 2 minutes walk away. Further messages were ignored, as was an email to their Manager. After Christmas, I tried again. No response to messages so I rang and spoke to the Manager, who promised me they would be in the post the next day, again, I confirmed I would pay the postage. No boots. Further messages did not get read on Messenger so forced to ring again. Was given some rubbish about them not using Facebook any more. They clearly turned off Messenger hoping I'd go away before turning it back on again a few days later. My next message was also ignored. They have my boots, they promised to return them on at least 3 different occasions before ignoring me, leaving me no option but to leave this review and go buy myself another pair. The Manager is dismissive and possesses no customer services skills once they have your money. They are aware we book multiple rooms every year and just don't care enough to simply return an item to a guest. I won't stay here again and neither will my colleagues. Shame because I enjoyed staying there but have no confidence in, or respect for a so called business who lie to you, fail to do what they have promised then blatantly ignore you. I think the Manager needs to go back to hospitality school! Be warned if you stay here - if you are unfortunate enough to have something to complain about or leave something behind, be prepared to be treated like dirt!

Great hotel with ample free parking at the rear of the property. The owner and staff are really friendly and helpful. Traffic from the main high street can be heard in rooms at the front as no double glazing. We ate in the onsite restaurant which I would highly recommend as it was fabulous. A very tasty breakfast with fresh local produce was also enjoyed the next morning.
