Nisarg Resort is located off Kolhapur city, on the way to Jyotiba Temple and Panhala Fort. It is not meant for those who want to stay in Kolhapur city, or those who intend to make multiple trips into Kolhapur or to the Ambabai Mahalakshmi temple there. Rather, we went to the Kolhapur temple first, then proceeded to Nisarg. The next day we drove over to Jyotiba and Panhala. Nisarg Resort is an outstanding experience. We loved it in December, but I'm pretty sure every season has its charm with this place. The entire resort is a masterclass in sustainable development, with every stone and rock a collector's item, and every piece of wood lovingly collected and seasoned over ages, and thoughtfully, tastefully put together, arranged, curated to please the senses. The lawns, the plants, the trees - all so nicely maintained that one is tempted to just stay put and never leave! The road outside is peaceful, with just the occasional vehicle passing by, the silence otherwise only punctuated by the calling of oh so many different species of birds! We stayed at the Stone Cottage, also called the Parijaat, which boasts of its own private lawn where you could lie stargazing, and watch both sunrise and sunset. The modern conveniences are all there, but blended so unobtrusively with the traditional construction of the place. Yes, sometimes the power fails, and the generator only powers half the electrical points, but one hardly tends to notice this. The other rooms are works of art too - quite literally! The Wada is a traditional sprawling home rebuilt stone by stone from what was taken apart in the southern part of the country when someone there had chosen to renovate. One can see how the entire resort could become the site for a closest friends only destination wedding or function centered around the Wada. A special mention needs to be made of the special bunch of people who run and maintain Nisarg. They are extremely hard working, and take care of every little need the guests have. The food is traditional and very well made, with significant care taken to segregate vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare. What stood out during our stay there was the voluntary enthusiasm and sheer effort taken by Mahesh Sutar, one of the carpenters at their permanent employ, in explaining and showcasing the best of the resort. We left Nisarg very reluctantly, richer in health from the purity of the place, richer in spirit from the tranquility of the place, and richer in mind from the knowledge.
