Flatdogs Camp

Flatdogs Camp is beautifully located by the river giving terrific views and wildlife in the camp. The tents are fabulously appointed and the staff could not be more attentive while not being overbearing, just right. The pool was a great place to relax between game drives and the food was terrific. Of course the whole point of being there is to see animals, Jonathan our knowledgeable guide and his night drive spotter Elias were absolutely fantastic finding a host of local residents including lions, leopards, painted dogs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, genet, Pels’ fishing owl, impala, water buck, kudu, tortoise and a host of birds, lizards and small rodents. The stops during the drives for sundowners and morning coffee were sublime giving an opportunity to really take in the magnificent surroundings. All in all if you want a safari, you want Flatdogs. Camp.

We stayed for 6 nights in mid November 2024. We sampled most of the rooms! 2 nights in a luxury safari tent, 2 nights in Crocs Nest and 2 nights in a chalet. All were great. Crocs Nest was amazing with our own private pool and meals delivered to us. The pool in the main camp is also lovely to cool off in on the hot November days. We were lucky that we had basically no rain. The food was fab; lots of choice and great that you can eat when you want rather than there being set meal times. Our guide Chris and spotter Smart were both fantastic and we are saying that having been on many safaris across Southern and Eastern Africa. All the staff are lovely and friendly. Thanks to Jess, Ade and all the team. We hope to return.

It’s an always a pleasure to come back to Flatdogs with its vibrant staff, well orchestrated schedules for wake up, start off and game drives. It doesn’t matter how many times you have been here the guides are enthusiastic, a great source of knowledge and eager to respond to questions and requests. Flatdogs also offers a unique clientele that I always find interesting to interact with on the drives and around meals. This particular trip was very memorable owing to particularly great sightings and great meals. The classic tent was more than great for relaxation, photo review and refreshing cold showers in the high Luangwa temperatures. In the night giant figures of elephants walked by as is the custom enhancing the experience of being in this untamed wilderness. Hope to visit again in the coming year 😊.

Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa is unarguably the best safari trip experience we have ever had ( and we have done Masai Mara, Tsavo, Ol Pejeta, Serengeti and more in the best of camps and lodges). What sets it apart, among many things, is the phenomenal care the team takes in ensuring you are comfortable. I mean right from reservations to pick up from the airport to being received at the camp to the meals to the game drives to the poolside siesta to the final goodbyes - no other place has made us feel as much at home and cared for. From Jess and Adrian's super warm hosting to Anna and Dave's care throughout, from Bwalya's game drives and guiding expertise to Carol's handling of our meals, from Lydia's reception to Israel's being on call for any query, from Shamilimo's fabulous dishes to Nicholas' protective vigilance - and the efforts of everyone else on board - it is an establishment with a lot of heart, and the expertise to go with it. Now for the experience beyond the heavenly campsite. More than 45 lions sighted in 4 days. Leopard cubs, leopard mamma atop a tree, down on the ground, a male leopard walking ahead of us caught in the headlights of our safari vehicle at night, lions devouring a buffalo as a herd of elephants watch on, 20 elephants crossing the river amidst an african sunset while we sip our sundowners, Elephants practicing fights, and a hundred other joys! Bottom line - we have never been so lucky. Morning sunrise drive with a coffee and cookies break in between. Afternoon sunset drives with sundowners amidst the setting sun and then the night part of the drive going back to the camp. All surreal, real and beyond what mere words can describe. We were also treated to an exclusive and personalised dinner under the stars by team flatdogs on our last night - which was touching. We had a late flight on check out day, and were graciously offered the use of a chalet till departure time. These little but inimitably humane touches added so much to the experience. We will keep going back, as much as we can, as long as we can. Thank you, team Flatdogs! We have now stayed at Flatdogs twice in the last two years, and have loved our stays on both occasions. The location is really stunning on the banks of the Luangwa river and although in a Game Management Area rather than the Park, the wildlife we experienced within the lodge area was sensational. We were there for three days this time and had elephants continuously entering and wandering around the camp it was brilliant. The tents that we stayed in were lovely and so spacious, the views outside of the tents across the river were amazing with impala and puku etc joining for breakfast. However it is Ade, Jess, and all of the wonderful staff that really makes Flatdogs so special. They do anything to make our stay special, I wasn't too well for a day or so, and everyone was there to make life better for me etc. Our guide was Kennedy who was so good, and again he managed to find us some amazing game viewing over our time at Flatdogs. Well done Flatdogs. We plan to return soon for a longer stay.

We stayed at Flatdogs to celebrate a 60th birthday this September. From start to finish our stay was superb, the hospitality is exceptional and the quality and choice of food is outstanding. We were lucky enough to stay in both a luxury tent and the Jackalberry Treehouse, both were wonderful, but the Treehouse is AMAZING!! It's so magical to sleep with just a mosquito net, but feel safe and comfortable as well. The guiding team at Flatdogs are brilliant and make every drive or walk special. I can't wait to come back.
