Oh dear. Perhaps we caught them on an off day. At least I hope it was an off day and that it’s not always like this. The chap at the next table sent his fish and chips back for being cold; another customer walked out demanding their money back after seeing their seafood platter: and then there was our experience. We waited a fair old time for any food to turn up - and then a plate with something that looked like one of our dishes went past, with the man carrying it lifting up the bread to check what was underneath! In full view of us all. We had been asked about allergies - well we are all allergic to having our food manhandled in public immediately before it being re-routed to our table. The sardines and chips were very good, if slightly over-grilled, but the prawns in the Marie Rose sandwiches tasted of nothing and gave the impression of just having been defrosted and covered in a thin tasteless sauce. The mussels were ok but the sauce was thin and unpleasantly sweet with no hint of wine or cream. We felt sorry for the young pair handling the front of house because there are clearly serious issues behind the scenes for which they are left to take the flak. But we just can’t get over the ineptitude of the man who seemed, from where we sitting, to go straight from answering the phone and handling equipment to sticking his fingers in our food. It’s such a pity, as we’d been there a few nights earlier, and while it was slow, we enjoyed the food and said we would go back. It should and could be a gold mine, even in September, with a bit more focus on the basics. But sadly, two visits is enough.
