Taken aback at the price of hotels I wondered if a guest house would be the answer...especially as I had read these tended to be of a very high standard in Porto. Then there Maison Des Amis It's a former antiques showroom and the furniture throughout reflects this in spacious and luxurious rooms at what I would consider to be real world prices. A sitting room with its card table, library, comfortable sofa and television is very cosy indeed There is a kitchen that guests can use for a self-catering experience with a coffee machine available and fruit for guests to take - it's enough to get you out in the morning and there's a cafe next door if you fancy something more. It's not really in the heart of the old town but is one street behind Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis and 10 minutes walk from landmark Torre dos Clerigos. Sao Bento Train Station is not much further down the road. I must thank owner Nelson who was consistently very very helpful from the booking stage to the point I checked out. Very impressive and highly recommended.

This very large garden view room was right in the heart of the city within easy walking distance to all the sites. The property is surrounded by fabulous restaurants, many of which cater to the locals. The room itself is just beautiful. The ceilings must be 20 feet high and ornately decorated. The room is so spacious. There are actually 2 bathrooms in the room. his and hers! There is a wall of walk-out windows that lead to a beautiful balcony complete with furniture to enjoy the outside view. The rooms at Maison des Amis share a kitchen. The owners bring fresh fruit daily from the local market. We have NEVER had an orange like this. It was so juicy, I couldn't peel it because the juice was running out. Use a knife. The best part of this rental is Nelson, the owner and his wife Lourdes. Every day he would check in with us on what's app wanting to know if we needed anything. He met us at check-in and check-out. We really enjoyed visiting with him and his wife while we waited for our Uber to the airport. We were sad our driver arrived so soon as we were enjoying our chat, in perfect English, so much. Please do yourself a favor and stay here. You won't regret it!
