Thunderbird Lodge

Gracious host. Basics generally OK. Facility somewhat aged. Blankets a bit thin. Pillows uncomfortable. Breakfast adequate. Met our expectations.

This is a good dependable hotel that is comfortable and convenient.

Let’s address the obvious question first. Yes, it’s next to a truck stop and looks a bit sketchy, but no, the lot lizards aren’t hanging out in the parking lot. Planning our trip (isn’t everyone?) and wanted to stay in Mitchell one night. The major chain hotels wanted $250 per night. The thunderbird had king rooms for $100. The reviews were pretty good, so we gave it a try. When we checked in the wives were pretty skeptical, but the manager (owner?) allowed them to see the rooms. They were cleaner than some major hotels we’ve stayed in. Bed was comfortable, shower was hot, and the AC worked fine. The breakfast is pretty minimal, but it will get your day started. Hard boiled eggs and bagel is my normal breakfast, and both were available and fresh. Bottom line - we were glad we stayed here. Saved us $150, which easily offsets the cost of breakfast if you choose to eat elsewhere.

I've stayed at Thunderbird many times. Nice, clean place convenient to restaurants. Its an older motel but everything is well maintained. They also have a decent breakfast.

The rooms are very dated. We only were staying as a stop over one night. Would not have taken a shower in the bathroom. It was just ick. The room overall felt humid and sticky. On the plus side, it was very quiet and the beds were clean and comfortable. Dinner was wonderful at the Cattleman’s club right behind the motel.

We stopped there for one night on our way to Rapid City SD. The people who own the motel are very friendly and courteous. The room was adequate, bed was comfortable. Did not try their breakfast, we walked next door to the diner for breakfast so I cannot comment on that. And at $80 for the night, it was a great price. There are places to eat within walking distance and a lot more places within a mile if you are driving. This could be a really nice place. but unforunately they are not keeping up with maintenance issues. Inside the room: The frame for the mirror was pulling away from the wall, the cabinet holding the fridge had molding broke off and unfinished wood exposed, the caulk in the shower was old and moldy. The rug appeared to need a good cleaning. Outside: The chairs outside the doors were very old and ripped. The concrete stairs are old and crumbly. These issues made me feel that "uncomfortable unclean" feeling staying there. The building is showing it's age and wear and tear is visible. One of the reasons we picked this motel is for the RV parking. They have a place between their parking lot and Circle K. We have a 19 ft truck towing a 31 ft 5th wheel. There were no other vehicles in that lot, so we found entering it through two large pylons from the Circle K lot was the most reasonable. Otherwise, you have to use the other entrance, which looks like it's the restaurant next door parking entrance, the Cattleman's Club. If there were other vehicles in that lot at the time it would definitely made it more difficult. And if you tow an RV, you understand, because we may or may not have been able to maneuver enough to park in that lot with the angles at the entrance and in the parking lot. You won't run into bad things like bugs or anything, so if you stay here it would be OK. If I was driving through Mitchell again I don't think I would stay there again. I would pay more for a different motel/hotel if the rooms were better kept up. IF the prices of the other places were crazy high, I might stay again if it were just one night. If we were staying multiple nights, then no, definitely would not stay again.
