Because it snowed in the Garmisch area during our first drive through, we decided to trek back to see the Neuschwanstein castle on our way to Italy from Austria. Much of our trip was pre-scripted with hotels, but had an open night. But wanted to see the countryside, so took the back roads and somehow rolled into Mittenwald at just the right time of the afternoon. Saw the Hotel Bichlerhof and stopped, but couldn't find anyone at the front desk, so drove around the village again before deciding this looked like a good place. My wife went in while I waited, and finally found someone to ask about a room ... she came out and said this was the place after looking at a room. We stayed in a room 102 just off the dining area. Nice Holiday Inn level room at a fair price near the town center. Wifi directions a little sketchy. And don't ask for ice ... they don't offer it. But otherwise, a nice place. Bed comes with breakfast, and it was well attended the next morning. The small town is picturesque ... some of the nicest building exterior decor that we saw anywhere during our 3 week adventure through Europe. Mittenwald is a very nice town that's a bit off the beaten track, and well worth the visit ... likely no one you know has ever been there if you're from the U.S. Our night "hotelier" person was a little abrupt ... finally brought us our first and last deliver of 4 ice cubes in a small dish while loudly declaring "finis!". Interesting addition to our trek through Europe. Worthy of a stopover when you are in Mittenwald ... even if you have to go a bit out of your way to get here.
