The Hunters Inn

Beautiful location, we had booked a Sunday lunch for all our family, they charge a service charge so we thought that a waitress would collet our order but no you have to go to the bar . Dinner took along time to arrive, first my dinner was wrong, the roast dinners only had two tiny roast potatoes each , and a slice of roast parsnip. We asked for more potatoes and was told that we would be charged for them. We then asked about pudding and coffee but apparently the kitchen was closed. When we complained we were told that you can’t please everyone. What did we pay service charges for when we had no service.

The Hunters Inn Hotel was an off-hand reference in a South West Coast Path walker’s guide, but given its proximity to the path, we decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a wonderful case of “all expectations exceeded.” How can you not enjoy being greeted by a peacock as you limp up to the hotel after a long day’s walk? And what’s better than a friendly, warm greeting at the reception when you’re dead tired? I don’t understand the many reviews here complaining about the food — our dinner and the morning’s breakfast were impeccable, especially given the hotel’s remote location. Kudos to the kitchen! Our lodging was similarly impeccable: a clean, comfortable room with a spacious bath and windows facing down the lovely valley. Anyone planning to walk this stretch of the South West Coast Path should definitely consider a night or two at Hunter’s Inn.

Walking the South West Coast Path we so enjoyed coffee and cakes that we decided to return for lunch the following day. But lunch was very disappointing - expensive and very ordinary food, including over-cooked chips and meagre side salads. What a let down after such good cake!

I fully understand the difficulties that this sector has faced, due to massively increased costs. But the food quality over the last few years has gone down and down and prices have gone in the opposite direction. It's a stunning building, in a stunning location. Pannini and chips are £15.00. A few frozen chips and something out of Tesco express with a bit of salad. £25 for a bottle of pinot not even chilled. 'it should be chilled, it's fresh from the cellar!'. No! And, ludicrously, you order food by going to the bar and giving a table number yet 10% is added as a service charge. This isn't the fault of the staff. Someone higher up has decided to ditch quality and good service, and hope that people ignore the food and enjoy the setting. Sorry. Nowhere near good enough.

Brilliant place food was lovely great value for money, the staff where amazing went above and beyond printed some words searches and colouring out for the kids, the peacock roaming outside was beautiful and added to the atmosphere overall fantastic definitely recommend.

We chose the hotel due to the setting and it being dog friendly and it being our first child free time in 10 years it had to be right. The drive down is a little interesting at times but the view of the hotel is quite something set in a beautiful valley. We were in room 3 looking back up the valley and soon settled in. Now onto the important bits, the food and drink were excellent with service to match. All the staff were super helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Try and book a window seat for dinner if you can as the views over the garden are stunning and if you’re not lucky just enjoy the views over the amazing breakfast you’ll be served. I’m fussy, like really fussy and spend too much time away from home in hotels but I honestly cannot fault the hotel, staff, food or location. I hope one day we’ll be able to return to this little slice of tranquility.
