I had been looking for a hotel in North Norfolk for a while and am usually guided by my stomach with brilliant menus, comfort is another big ask, and finally an oasis of calm in lovely gardens. Not an easy combination to find together with old fashioned service thrown in, but you will find it all here in this little gem called Beechwood Hotel. Service, as well as the accommodation here is also in a time-worp, but in the nicest possible way. Staff make you feel an honoured guest, they are all young, immaculately turned out in smart uniforms, know their jobs inside out, and have been professionally trained to produce that perfect degree of friendliness and professionalism so lacking these days in the catering profession. Needless to say the brigade of chefs also ensured that the ever changing evening menus were first class, cooked and served to perfection. A time is agreed, your arrival is met in the lounge with nuts and olives, a place reserved, evening menus offered for ordering while your favourite drink is mixed. Chef's canapés of the day are then served before you are then escorted to your awaiting table in the restaurant all perfectly set for the meal ahead. Even the Amuse Bouche are almost a course in themselves and change each evening.... a tinkling grand piano completes the scene some evenings. The Art Deco vibe goes through the whole establishment embellished with the Agatha Christie connection as she wrote some novels here we gather. True the weather was perfect for my stay but the complimentary cream tea on arrival in that tranquil garden under a sun umbrella, was memorable to say the least. It did seem that the clientele were of a certain age and in some ways that's a pity as younger people might well do to learn that good old fashioned service, food and comfort which they might never have enjoyed before, is very much alive and well at Beechwood House.
