Upstairs Hotel

We loved this hotel. While booking and reading about the hotel, we were slightly concerned that it would be a bit too “funky” (we are in our 60s and 70s), but it was definitely a nice place to stay for all ages. First of all, we had requested a low floor room, and the request was well taken into account, which is not the case in all hotels. We had booked a big room and it was really wonderful. The room was nice, with separate bathroom and toilet, and with a wooden (or fake wooden) floor, which we always appreciate. Much cleaner and nicer than all those carpet floors in many places. Reception staff was kind, polite, quick and knowledgeable. Breakfast was outstanding. The bar in the evening was very pleasant. Location is excellent. Some minor points we did not like (and hence the 4 “star” rating) were the following. The mattress was very hard, for us too hard, but some people might like it. The floor in the shower was too slippery, this can easily be avoided by other materials. The shower was already narrow, and with the (unnecessary) soapdish attached to the wall it became even narrower. There was space enough for a larger shower. When we came back to the room after 3 PM, it was still not cleaned (the ”YES” sign to request cleaning was put up before 10 AM). Understandable, because it was a very busy Friday with lots of changes, and a basket was put in front of the door later with new towels etc … All these were minor issues, and we will certainly return to this place.

Hipster Hotel, very close to all the action and a short walk from the train station. Staff were friendly enough, and the lobby area has lots of cool features like a pit, slide, and dartboard. Unfortunately the rooms are a little uncomfortable. Quite small, no aircon, noisy (you hear every flush) and serviced by small corridors. Great WiFi and shower, OK breakfast. Probably would not return but fine if you're young and easily amused for a night or two. Certainly not in the summer as a lack of air might be unbearable.

We stayed at the Upstairs Hotel for three nights. It’s a great hotel in a really good location, close to the promenade. My four year old daughter LOVED the slide (how could she not!). The breakfast was great (albeit an add on). The room was fine, but my main criticisms were that the room is too hot (we were on the 7th floor and there is no AC), the hairdryer wasn’t working, you get no hand soap, and the double bed was just two single beds joined together. If they could fix these things it would easily be a five star rating.

Extremely noisy and nothing special like e.g. fitness/gym or pool. But the location is rather good, if the weather is good and you want to go to the beach. It seems the belgians love this place, but I think it's bad and overpriced (which Oostend perhaps also is). On 2 of the 3 days I was there there was a hellowa drilling machine noise from the room just next to mine, I cannot believe they're renovating in the middle of high season instead of doing it when there aren't that many guests. Also, the doors were/are really cheap so noise from outside the hallway is incredibly loud inside the room. I don't think I'll be coming back, I prefer Germany where there are many much better hotels for the same price and often with gym/fitness and/or swimming pool and/or free parking and/or free breakfast included.

Surprisingly hip place in a rather special city, unique and definitely wort a visit. The hotel is cool, comfortable and the price is completely correct. The breakfast is really worth it and the ocean is 30 Meters away from the hotel, perfect.

Really fantastic hotel for a quick beach getaway. Hotel is located on a side street that runs perpendicular to the beach and the front door of the hotel is maybe 50 meters from the sand. Lobby is funky and inviting with foosball, ping pong , lots of seating nooks and a nice bar. We had our dog and the staff was always friendly towards our dog who was allowed in the bar area and in the room. Dog was not allowed in the restaurant so we couldn't enjoy the well reviewed breakfast. Definitely recommend the roof top rooms if you can get one --- the roof deck was awesome as we had really nice weather. deck faces perpendicularly to the beach so you have beach/ocean views as well as views of the city. Nice sized room.
