The Old Phuket is a 4-star hotel due to its facilities. Usually 4-star also coincides with a high quality of customer service. Unfortunately not in this hotel.
At check-in I was discriminated against as a solo white male traveller. I was made to sign a waiver stating that I would pay THB1,400 if a woman accompanied me to my room. I noted couples did not have to sign forms (I guess 3somes are not popular in Karon). I’m unsure if this action is also racist as I was unable to observe single guys of other nationalities checking in.
On the first night, walking barefoot in my room, I accumulated black hairs on the soles of my feet. As a balding blonde European - you can imagine how off putting this experience was for me.
I had a further issue with Housekeeping when my room was unmade by 5pm on the 3rd day. I phoned Reception who explained that 56 guests were due to check in today. Hmmm….
Finally, I requested a 2nd key for my room. There are a limited number of electrical sockets and it requires a key card in a slot to recharge devices. Two Receptionists refused my request. I asked to speak with a Supervisor who agreed but made me sign a waiver that if I didn’t return 2 keys, I would be charged THB100.
So there we have it - 4-star Old Phuket service!
On a positive note, the hotel is well located and the rooms are lovely (but dirty). Shout out for the Security guards who were always cheerful and helpful.
