I booked on *********** from April 30, 2023 - May 7, 2023 but left one day earlier with staff’s written consent. Casa Kraken Hostel only takes cash and no credit, and I ran a bit short in pesos overtipping my cab driver getting there. They also do not give receipts, and only put “notes” in their system, which as a U.S. American, is not good enough for me. I arrived past registration hours and paid an extra $100 pesos for being late, and $100 pesos more as a deposit, which was not mentioned when I booked. There were 2 men and 1 woman there when I checked in, and only one of the men spoke good enough English to conduct the transaction, however, they all knew some and spoke to me. I was first placed in bed #4 which is right across from the door in the female dorm, but asked to move to bed #8 in the corner when one of the other guests left the door wide open as I was in the middle of changing clothes. Both beds were a bit itchy and uncomfortable with thin mattresses and pillows. The bathrooms are ALL MIXED and the stalls were so see-through that I could see a guy walking toward my stall with the door shut and shouted out that I was in there before he opened the door. After that, the next day I noticed that the doors seemed frosted and less see-through, so maybe they fixed it. Still, privacy and decency should still be respected no matter political views, location, etc. The only good thing about the showers are the hot water, but there are no hooks and the water pressure is a bit weak. Someone left their clothes on top of one of the stalls for days without staff removing it. The toilets were clean, however, the walls are stained with bodily fluids which have long been there. The hostel is not the absolute worse that I have been in, however, cleanliness and customer service are a minimum requirement for a business, and is not going above and beyond. On my last night, the receptionist who signed my “receipt” agreeing that I would stay 6 days instead of 7, said in fine English that she had to speak to me about my reservation. A man that was not there the night I arrived stated that I had to pay for another night, to which I declined. I explained that I had spoken to the owner (a very nice Mexican lady) a few days before who had explained to me that both *********** and Hostelworld were booking them when the systems were down. I said that even though my reservation shows an extra night, I paid for 6 nights and it was accepted by and a receipt made up and signed by the staff. Out of the blue and completely out of nowhere, this man says to me, “Well, she doesn’t speak good English and THIS IS A SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRY!” To which I calmly replied, “Well, you accept business and money from English speakers, don’t you? There are people coming to the U.S. not knowing the language, but I have never told a Mexican that they have to speak English!” I was beyond embarrassed, hurt and appalled by his rude comment, and let him know that it was racist, to which he a
