Casona Plaza Hotel Puno

Hotel was located one block from the Main Square. The room was reasonable enough but shower was a ridiculous arrangement being accessible via a tiny bath with a sloping side making going in and out of the shower extremely precarious. Talking to others in the group wouldn’t indicate that most rooms have this arrangement. Breakfast was decent enough.

To be honest this is the worst hotel I’ve stayed at during my 2 weeks in Peru. The hotel is centrally located allowing you to explore the city and go to the harbor to see the Titicaca lake but it is the only plus. the room did not have a window to the outside (one was facing another room and the bathroom one the hallway. the lift was just behind our bathroom causing a lot of noise. no sound insulation at all! you cqn hear conversation from the hallway, next door and also across the hallway! the room and the hotel are very outdated! breakfast buffet is not appetizing. you are allowed to one egg per person (very strict about it) and if you dare to go for a second round at the buffet the staff give you a look making you doubting if you are allowed to… if you can, avoid this hotel!

Located easy walking distance to the main plaza, which also means things can get a bit noisy at times. The hotel has 5 or 6 floors, with two open stairwells and two small elevators. Rooms varied in furnishings - some are inside, some have opening windows/no AC/freestanding heater (as we saw in multiple hotels in Peru), some have AC; some rooms have wood-like flooring and others have carpet (which smelled, according to friends who had it). Our shower had a louvered window which opened to an internal column which was also accessible to the hallway. Noise travelled easily throughout all floors of the hotel, as well as the heat from a wood-burning fireplace on one side of the lower level. Breakfast buffet was a bit limited.

Hotel was i a good location, walkable to the main square with shops and eateries. In the midst of narrow streets of Puno puts the hotel in a very small tight location at a road junction. Hotel has 2 lifts and can be pretty cramp when there are many people in the lobby. Explore nearby thieves market (5-minutes away and 5-soles) by tuk tuk. WiFi is rather weak throughout the hotel and may have to toggle between the various hotel network. Even our own WiFi data had issues connecting at times as the hotel location is too congested. Room was of good size and comfortable but can be noisy when the lifts are in operation, even though our room was located away from it and when there are the frequent festivities going through the streets outside. Rooms were made up every day and cleaned thoroughly. Staff seldom smile, can be impatient and at times they do not understand when we ask them for something in English. Breakfast has a limited spread and can get crowded. And yes if you want breakfast eggs do order from the egg station.

We stayed here for a couple of nights on our way to Cusco to acclimatise a bit. We were greeted with lovely service from all staff and our room was absolutely perfect. Room was extremely comfortable and bed was very clean. The Wi-Fi was good and it was so nice to come back in from the cold and always be able to have a hot shower (not like some other hotels we’ve stayed at). There was also coca tea always available in reception. We also had dinner at the restaurant which was very nice but there was quite a long wait time (45-60 mins and we were the only table there), food was worth the wait though!

I stayed at the Casona Plaza hotel Puno for one night as part of an organised tour of Peru. It was all good - well located near the centre, quiet, clean and very comfortable with good wifi. Nice breakfast.
