I found the motel room fine for a one night stay. I was visiting Maungatautari and wanted to stay some where near. The location is good, with Countdown almost directly opposite. The room was fine and quiet, even though I had neighbours on both sides and the motel seemed pretty full. The bed was a little soft, but I slept well. Shower was good. The WiFi did drop out a couple of times in the evening. It is really odd that the curtains aren't pleated - they draw tightly across the windows and almost fit. It just looks odd. And I would have liked a table or stand for my suitcase. The room was quite spacious, but the suitcase has to go on the floor or the bed, no other option.

This place is a DUMP!! If you usually live in a hovel then you will feel right at home here! Ants all over the kitchen, filthy tea cups, filthy looking carpet, cheap and nasty plastic kettle falling apart into my FRESHLY washed cup, badly stained toilet and basin, suspicious stains on the bedding - stayed there less than 2 hours due to a medical emergency - asked nicely for a part refund (less laundry costs which was very fair given the nasty look of the bedding) - FLATLY REFUSED!! I couldn't believe such nasty accommodation existed in our lovely country! Do yourself a big favour and move on - $160 a night!!! Are you joking - $1.60 a night would be a rip off!! The owner will likely deny the place is a tip - like he has in response to negative comments - go on then, try staying there!! THIS PLACE SHOULD BE CONDEMNED OR BULLDOZED!!

I think this place is used as some sort of halfway house or something. The room was very basic and beyond tired. Paint flaking off walls etc. Beds very old and look shabby. Went to use the bathroom and found used syringe in the toilet. Im travling with my child and I didn't feel safe. I think we were there for 15 minutes. One thing I do need to give credit for is they gave us a full refund.

Putaruru is a handy stopover for travel between Auckland and Wellington or Hawkes Bay, and although this is an old motel, it is well located for being far enough back from the main highway that the trucks thundering by aren't too disturbing, and it's great that the Countdown supermarket is just up the opposite side of the road. We are always looking for a separate bedroom, which is becoming expensive, and this motel is an old but affordable option. We had unit 3, and found it OK, a bit of wall damage in the bathroom and shower unit, paintwork a bit worn in places, but overall the unit looks as if it has been recently re-painted, and was well aired. The rear windows were fully open when we arrived. The unusually small kitchen has a full stove, which is becoming rare these days. The bathroom area is also a bit cramped, but overall, the unit is not gloomy or pokey, as it has lots of windows. Most importantly, the beds are OK.
