OYO The White Horse, Ripon North Yorkshire

The hotel is advertised as a B&B both online and outside the hotel.Their was no food at all.We had to find another hotel for breakfast.The room was 4 flights of stairs up with unstable hand rails.No lift.Not very good for an OAP.The rooms especially the bathroom were filthy.The bathroom floor hadnt been mopped for ages.There was a cobweb approx a foot sqare that looked like it had been there for a long time.

Worst place we have ever stopped it was filthy dust everywhere tv didn't work curtains were hanging off and absolutely filthy. toilet brush was a absolutely disgrace banisters up to the 3rd floor was hanging off room stunk of chip shop grease no parking or breakfast that was advertised not that we wld of eaten from place it was absolutely horrendous

Fabulous location ,just minutes walk to the town. Nice looking court yard. Never met the owner but the lady who dealt with us was very friendly. No breakfast even though it states breakfast. Room 7 was dirty and stuffy. One tiny window which you couldn't open, it was covered in dust and thick cobwebs. The bed filled the tiny room so just enough room to walk round the bed . The wall at side of bed was covered in foot prints. It states tea and coffee facilities, but it wasn't til the next morning when we wanted a cuppa we realised there was only one sachet of sugar and no milk but there was noone to ask that early in the morning. Later on after our walk I went in the pub and asked for milk and sugar and was given a little jug of milk and sugar in a pot no lids on either. I asked for sachets of both and was told there wasn't any. The room was that hot the milk curdled. After 2 days we decided we'd had enough even though we paid for 3 nights we came home. I did ask for a refund but was told no.

Cheerful, friendly staff working hard to make a go of it. Pretty courtyard, plenty of flowers. Room 9: clean and tidy, and although very small, everything worked. Properly equipped, but no curtains and totally inadequate paper blinds. The room stank of damp even after I tried to air it. When I pointed this out, one of the staff said that as no one had mentioned it, they didn’t know. How didn’t they know? They prepared the room every time a customer used it. The other rooms may well have been fine, so this criticism is directed only at room 9. I hope they succeed but they shouldn’t use this room until the problem has been solved. Really terrible room. There was no window that opened and the extractor fan in the bathroom didn’t work. The result was a very horrible smell of dampness, mould and general unpleasantness. There was black dirt / mildew all over the walls and just terrible. The carpets and walls were also filthy - hair and dirt everywhere. We had friends staying in other rooms and they said they weren’t good either. Maybe the rooms in the pub are better / but avoid family rooms in the stable yard as they are not fit to be rented out. I would have moved, but no other options available!

Myself and my sister took our 85 year old mother away for a treat weekend. Pros - lady serving breakfast was so lovely, very pleasant and friendly. Pub in a central position. Courtyard is pretty. Cons - room was very dirty in need of a make over. Carpet was filthy, we felt like we couldn't walk on it with bare feet. Overflowing ashtrays in the smoking area which didn't get emptied, as non smokers this was disgusting. The dirty room put a downer on the whole weekend.

Visit Ripon and you will experience the "real" Yorkshire. Stay at The White Horse and you may experience real Yorkshire hospitality. Due to work commitments, I was unable to arrive by the latest check-in time, specified on the OYO website as 9pm, but when I phoned the owner directly he said "we're a pub, so we'll be open later than 9 anyway, and if there's a problem when you get here just call this number again." Sure enough, on stepping into the bar at 9.30pm I was greeted by name and shown to my room without fuss or delay, and was advised that breakfast (included in the price of my room) would be available from 7-9am. The room was set in the converted former stables behind the pub; it had sufficient wardrobe space, kettle and refreshments, decent toilet and shower facilities and a very comfortable bed, all immaculately cleaned. Breakfast was served in the spacious dining room adjacent to the bar. Cereal and juice are available straight away, with toast and coffee or tea offered. Only one round of toast was brought out "in case that's all you want" but more was available on request. Also open to request was the Full English - itemised on the menu (smoked or unsmoked bacon, sausages, fried scrambled boiled or poached egg, tinned tomato, baked beans, mushrooms) but the staff will ask you what you want, so you can specify. I wasn't staying long enough for lunch or dinner, but a glance at the menus revealed a good selection of food at very reasonable prices. My only disappointment is that I couldn't stay longer. I would definitely book again if returning to Ripon.

Lovely clean room with fantastic shower. Really good breakfast. Close to Ripon centre. Great friendly hospitality. Have stayed before and will definitely stay again. Very good value for money. Since my last stay it has been refurbished and now offers food during the day and evening. Thank you.

We had a lovely room in a pretty courtyard with beautiful flowers. Our dog Bisto was welcomed by Dave and offered a sausage every morning for breakfast. Dave kept calling him Bonzo which we laughed at but it actually suits him! Ripon is on the doorstep with a lovely river only 10 minutes walk away for great dog walking. We loved our stay and will be back!
