Stayed at Hotel Monterrey as part of a group tour. As many reviews will say, the hotel is ideally located right next to the beach. (+1) Admittedly, trying to check in 40 group members would try the patience of any reception staff, they achieved it quite quickly and efficiently. (+1). However, on further occasions when asked quite simple questions by members of the group, the responses were curt, abrupt and not always helpful. (-1) The rooms, although clean with comfortable beds, (+1), are below the standard of what I would expect from a 4-star hotel. Sparsely furnished with ‘cheap’ plastic chairs and a simple Formica-covered surface with no effective mirror to do make up. (-1). They do, however, have free wi-fi. (+1) Previous reviews have complained about the fact that there is no soap dispenser next to the sink. The hotel have ‘addressed’ this by issuing the smallest piece of soap I have ever seen in a hotel. (-1). It only lasts a few hand washes and new bar wasn’t issued for another three days. (-1) Glasses in the room were not washed for the whole week. (-1) Should you wish to have a mid-morning cup of coffee, don’t try going to the hotel bar as it doesn’t open until 12:00. (-2). The bars of many hotels I have stayed in are open by at least 10:00. Breakfast, served in the large dining room, does have a good variety of fruits, breads, hot food and omelettes (+1). Apparently, we were told they had a shortage of cutlery and therefore have to keep hold of your knife and fork for each course. So spreading butter using an egg and bacon coated knife doesn’t go down well. (-1). Our group had an area of tables set aside, but one couple, who wanted to eat alone, strayed onto a table just outside our ‘zone’ and was shouted at, in Spanish, by one of the table clearers that they must move back into the ‘zone’. Not only was this rude, but very humiliating for the elderly couple. (-2). Evening meals were not a lot different! Starters and sweets for the week we were there varied very little and were rather bland. The main meat course was usually a hunk of meat that was either very undercooked or tough. (-2). Plates were removed (without your cutlery!) often seconds after you had finished your course. (-1). I have read some of the management responses to reviews and after thanking contributors for their reviews, they state that our “feedback is vital in helping them resolve issues raised” or “have made note of your comments for consideration”. These are some responses from 2019 and yet have probably been “considered” but not acted upon. (-2). Overall (-10) seems a little harsh and very rarely do I submit such a poor review, but, I am sorry Monterrey, things need to improve……..I’m afraid I won’t return.
