This is a tricky place to review, but I will do my best to be fair. Firstly, if you're looking for a silvery, shiny, modern place with a touristy vibe, this place is Not for you. This is a place that will remind you that you're traveling-- in Mexico. That's what I look for when I travel and that's exactly what we got. We grew to love it here and found it very comfortable and above all, very central --minus all the tourist traffic that usually goes with staying in the old parts of towns. It is a little tucked away, in just the right ways, and this is always a big plus for me, and felt completely safe. There is a front key & key card system for the front door, that works quite well-- plus the area is quite safe feeling. The hotel is located inside an old convent which belonged to the cathedral of Felipe Neri, directly across the street. So, needless to say, the building is obviously an old bldg., and many old details have been preserved. We loved it for its charm and the very helpful and kind staff. As others have pointed out, it is directly over a bus stop and a public W.C. Neither of these two elements affected our tranquility and rest in Any way whatsoever! Mexico is noisy. We heard fireworks, church bells, honking, singing and music, and when we'd had enough, we closed the old heavy wood shutter doors, and it became completely silent and dark inside our room. True, no A/C, but we didn't need or miss it. SM is at a high altitude and was perfectly cool. We slept like carefree kittens. I loved being able to watch the day to day life of the town from the balcony (and got some great shots of life going ons from up there). Its central location couldn't have been more perfect, and we were still Not in the midst of a major tourist filled street, which tend to be quite noisy with the wrong sorts of ruckus. It felt more like we lived here for the 8 days of our stay, so the place itself became wonderfully interwoven into our trip. It can certainly be argued, as some have commented, that the decor of the room could definitely use some upgrading, and I did feel a bit underwhelmed by this at first-as I couldn't understand why in a town with so many beautiful artifacts, these were not used generously throughout the property, as they are used in many other hotels in the area. However, I quickly came to understand that this is a very different kind of place. The decor has been crafted to make it feel more like the efforts someone would have made in their home to make it more beautiful. It feels more like a genuine Mexican home which is maintained clean and comfortable but without pretense. It is not a cookie cutter boutique hotel, by any means. It has a personality of its own. Inside the room it felt more like we were staying in a native home. As far as location, everywhere you wish to go is walkable from here. In addition to the bus stop -- love it or hate it--there's also an ATM machine downstairs, which was very convenient, as there aren't many of these
