Hotel Alpenland St. Johann

We had a two-night stay at the Alpenland St Johann hotel. Our main reasons for staying here were easy access to Burg Hohenwerfen and also the Liechtensteinklamm gorge. We walked from the station to the hotel (as the distance was quite short), but it was slightly uphill so it would have been better to either wait for the bus or get a taxi. The Alpenland is large hotel, but August must have been out of season as a lot of facilities were not operational. We booked a family room, but ended up with two linked rooms which was brilliant – my son’s room has a decent kitchenette and a dining table. As we had two rooms we ended up with two sets of Nespresso capsules (that kept me very happy). There was nice views from the room balcony. There is a large (for a hotel) swimming pool with plenty of outside seating. Sauna area was not so good, I tried it once but it was not relaxing. There is also a gym, but I did not try this out. Breakfast was very average (we were probably spoiled by excellent breakfast in our two previous hotels). We were half-board; evening meals were OK, but there are several restaurants within a short walk of the hotel and these may have been a better option if not on a tight budget. There are a few supermarkets just meters away (from where we purchased lunchtime snacks); but could also have been used for getting whatever you needed for self-catering. For great ice-creams, we would recommend J&D Coffee company which is between the hotel and the shopping center. Local guest card provide free local transport to the railway station (great for trips to Saltzburg, Burg Hohenwerfen and also Bad Gastein) and also locally to the Liechtensteinklamm gorge – both buses running hourly.

Very good hotel for a family vacation. The service was excellent. The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have a/c, then you need to leave the window open and any noise can wake you up during the night or early morning.

Rooms with beautiful view of the mountains, nice beds and daily cleaning service. We got connecting rooms with a living/dining/kitchenette area, which was well equipped. Helpful front desk personnel. The hotel gave us courtesy transportation passes to use on all trains and buses in the Salzburg area, so we easily visited neighboring towns by train. A small tourism fee is charged daily, per each guest and collected at the end of your stay. It will be nice that sliding doors have screens to prevent insects to get inside the rooms and ceiling fans for warmer days because the hotel doesn't have A/C. Hotel has a very good location with plenty of restaurants, clothes, books and shoe stores. Banks and parks around and plenty of trails to hike around. The hotel has swimming pool, sauna and gym. It was a great experience!

This is our third time staying at Alpenland St Johann and we will definitely come again. The staff is terrific, the pool is great, the food is very good, and the hiking around the town is excellent. Peter took us on several excursions, which we really enjoyed. The front desk staff was very helpful. Our daughter said that she had the best massage of her life at the hotel. Overall, just excellent!

The Alpenland Resort is located in the lovely mountain town of St Johann im Pongau, where the air is fresh and the scenery beautiful. It is about an hour train ride away from Salzburg. The resort isn't overly large and has a relaxed feeling. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our suite was very clean and the bed was comfortable. If possible reserve a room at the back of the resort that overlooks the gardens. The hotel restaurant is quite good with regional specialties as well as pizza and burgers. We really enjoyed their desserts and the service was excellent. My husband and I were well looked after by Dora. The hotel has a large pool and hot tub as well as saunas. The pool and sauna area are exceptional clean. There is an in-house spa. We did not have any spa treatments but we're told by other guests that the massages are very nice. The hotel offers trips to points of interest. We booked the trip to Hallstatt. It was fabulous and well worth the time and expense. Peter our driver was first rate. We are already planning to return to the Alpenland and highly recommend this resort.
