The Fig Tree Shanklin

I celebrated my 60th birthday with an afternoon tea at the Fig Tree Hotel with some close friends. The hotel is really lovely. So clean, welcoming and modern. The staff were amazing, so attentive and nothing was to much trouble. They catered for all our dietary needs without question. Endless tea and coffee, with so much food. A selection of sandwiches, scones and beautiful little cakes. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

We arrived at The Fig Tree on Saturday 12th October only to find that the lift was not working (my husband uses a wheelchair). Obviously we were absolutely gutted and cross that noboby had bothered to let us know beforehand. The staff did what they could to help us. We spent the first night in a tiny room on the first floor, then got moved to a larger room on the first floor. Each morning my husband had to use his crutches to get down 13 stairs for breakfast! Then back up! It was meant to be a restful break! I spent a lot of time carting his wheelchair up and down steps. Fortunately we stayed at a reduced rate, due to the inconvenience.

1 night in executive room on first floor. Side view of next doors pool (rm 7). Good size room, comfortable bed, good bathroom (wet room; not a fan but very accessible, well-appointed and very clean). Lift available usually if can’t manage stairs, but flight wasn’t steep. Lovely ground floor facilities of restaurant and separate bar/seating area. View of the old church towards the cliff top but sea not visible from ground floor. Attentive staff. Had dinner; small menu but excellent presentation, flavour & size. Breakfast equally delicious. Serve yourself drinks, toast, fruit & yoghurt. (Nespresso coffee, Dorset tea). Table served full English. Parking on road at front; up to front door reception (steps or slope) and patio area or in car park at rear. (down steps). Short walk to cliff path, lift and steps. All very clean. Evidently getting their act together after their first season. Will do well, we’re sure.

A lovely clean and modern hotel. Huge rooms and very comfortable beds. Lovely bar. We had a problem with the drain smelling in our room which they tried to sort straightaway. When it didn't work, we were moved to an even larger room. Reception staff were lovely and so helpful.

What a fine stay we had at The Fig Tree, exceptional staff, beautiful and clean rooms. All our little requests were met immediately. Stayed here with a small group from Germany. We loved every minute. The bar has a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We also enjoyed a very fine open mic 🎤 evening. If you are looking for a hotel where you can holiday from the very first minute. This one it is.

Had my birthday weekend celebrating with family and it couldn’t have been better. Everyone at the Fig Tree contributed to making our stay really special so thank you all. I would recommend here to anyone looking for a relaxed break in a superb hotel.

Stayed for 3 nights in a suite with Seaview.Lovely hotel which has just been refurbished to a very high standard.Car park at rear of hotel with plenty of spaces.Heather was a star very helpful and nothing was any trouble to her.Already looking at booking again for next year

This was a great hotel, good location, beautifully decorated with very comfortable rooms. The staff were brilliant, especially Heather and Lucas. Heather, particularly, went out of her way to make my 94 year old mum feel special and welcome. I'm sure it will be a great addition to have the restaurant up and running.

Pros. Very nice hotel, obviously recently renovated, good location with parking, very nice room. Cons. Twice the toilet failed in the room. The flush just wouldn’t work. On the second occasion We left it a few hours and it didn’t reset. We reported to reception on our way out. On our return reception said it was OK when he went up to try it. We did that, it DIDNT work. Get a Plummer to fix it properly. Breakfast is a joke! I explained on arrival that I was Gluten Free and they said they would provide GF sausages. You complete a menu card with your order and I wrote across mine, very clearly, GLUTEN FREE. They supplied vegetarian sausages - yuk! There is a difference! I was also given hash browns with my bacon, egg, beans and mushrooms. I also had GF toast. Next morning I asked for NO sausages. My plate arrived WITH 2 veggie sausages, NO hash browns and NO toast they said the hash browns were not GF but they fed them to me the day before. I wondered why I had an upset stomach! Day 3 ordered breakfast with NO sausage and NO hash browns. Plate arrived WITH 2 sausages, WITH a hash brown and no toast. What a joke. If you’re not going to even look at the menu request what’s the point of filling it out. There is also a training issue here as the staff obviously don’t understand what is GF and what isn’t and what eating non GF food can do. Being GF is not a lifestyle choice it’s a disease that makes me ill if I eat it!
