The Lion Hotel Shrewsbury

I was staying in Shrewsbury for a weekend company conference in Telford I love the old world charm of the place Will definitely recommend and probably stay again for next year's event The pic below was taken on route

The hotel is in a good location and very convenient for exploring Shrewsbury on foot. Unfortunately, that was probably the main positive of our stay. The interior is very tired and in need of some attention. The floorboards are extremely creaky, some of the lamps didn’t work, and even small details such as lampshades that didn’t properly fit the lamps or match the decor added to the rather neglected feel of the room. The windows also did very little to block out noise from outside, and generally we found the hotel to be quite noisy. Our room was also far too hot and stuffy. The towel radiator in the bathroom seemed impossible to turn off and was constantly giving off heat, while the fan provided in the room didn’t work, which made things very uncomfortable. There was no bottled water provided in the room, and the television mounted on the wall was laughably small by today’s standards. It’s nice to have the option of watching some TV or a film in the evening when staying in a hotel, but the screen was so small that this was pretty much impossible to enjoy. More concerningly, the bedding had an unpleasant smell of damp or dirty washing, which certainly didn’t give the impression of a fresh, comfortable room. The layout of the hotel is also something of a labyrinth, and it’s surprisingly easy to get lost trying to find your room. There is currently no bar or restaurant at the hotel either, which is disappointing for a hotel of this size and character. Unfortunately, our stay was made considerably worse by a serious disturbance in the room next door at around 3am, which appeared to involve domestic violence and woke us up. We reported the incident to the hotel. It’s a shame because the building has plenty of character and the location is excellent, but overall the hotel feels tired, uncomfortable and in need of significant improvement. Sadly, we wouldn’t stay here again.

Really tired and unloved. Having said that … it’s could be a stunnnng place to stay and is full of history.

Friendly staff,&good location,slept really well linen & towels were very comfortable & clean,but a tired hotel,hopefully some TLC will sort, & would stay again.

Reception on arrival has the look of dark ages with dark wood panelling depicting a tudoresque style interior, it has a roomy layout from front to rear at ground level, warning to people with large suitcases, the entrance is via a rotating door. 1st floor is accessed by a staircase to the right of reception desk at which level there are 3-4 various choices of room stretches. There seems to be a large function/dining room at this level. Room I occupied was above the arch that allows cars to pass below to access parking. In itself the room was adequate and clean with furniture reflecting the Tudor theme, decent size built in wardrobe, bathroom needed refurbishment as taps were well used on sink and bath, shower was absolutely useless to balance heat, the window offered a view of the busy Y junction outside when open. Not a quiet frontage, but can imagine softens the noise to the rear. All this was adequate for my stay.

Very pleasant staff, pictures don’t do hotel justice, lovely old hotel with a museum vibe. Brilliant location. Will definitely return.

I was so sad to see such a wonderful old hotel not being used ! It is wonderful and would be great to see it renewed !!! I hope some investment can be put in to this lovely hotel

Warm period atmosphere hotel. Very clean, quiet and spaceous rooms. A few small steps to negotiate to room but no problem for us. Very good value. No meals or breakfast served but great location to walk to cafes and pubs. Also near town centre. Covered car park at hotel. Excellent discount for residents but be aware spaces limited and cannot be reserved. It is also available to non residents so can get busy. We would certainly return.

Mattress was slightly tilted, so it was as if the bed was on an incline. Heater was too strong and at night I don’t think that’s very healthy, woke up a bit dizzy. Location is nice. Also Wifi barely works on the second floor.
