Before writing this review I should point out that I stayed here 2 years ago and gave a five star review then, and was looking forward to this second stay. Reception (good last visit) are now incredibly slow at check in. Not just with us, but with others too. They don’t have enough staff on, so even a simple activity like getting pool towels involves a long wait if other customers are being served (and even then it seems the staff can’t count to two🤦♂️) After checking in we were told the aircon in our room was not working. We were told it had broken the day before (a Saturday) and because it was a weekend they claimed they could not get an engineer out? Really? What kind of hotel doesn’t have a 24/7 call out on essential services? I asked if they had fans that we could use in the room. Response “No, we have none left”. Then why not get some more and put them in all affected rooms without guests having to ask? The room was not pleasant, not just because of the temperature but because we had to close the shutters and curtains to keep the direct sun out, thus rendering our sea view room a non sea view room. I contacted our holiday company about this and they contacted the hotel and the next day another room, with working aircon, was miraculously available. I have absolutely no doubt that without the holiday company intervention, the hotel would have done nothing as it was clear that several guests had been trying to move for days without success. It became obvious that broken aircon has been an issue for a while and despite what the hotel seems to be telling people, it’s not being fixed soon as a spare part is awaited. Quite simply, many customers have been lied to. Why would a hotel do that? Be honest with your customers and deal with an issue proactively (eg supply fans without asking) and people will be forgiving. Show a total disdain for your customers and it will not be forgotten. Once we had been moved there was no contact whatsoever from the hotel to check that things were now OK. This was disappointing. There are good and bad points to the hotel and these are mostly listed in other reviews so I’m not going to waste my time repeating them in detail. Suffice to say it is a worse hotel than it was two years ago. Looking tired. Lacking in maintenance. Various signs of cost cutting. Several customers we spoke to who have stayed at the Fergus for years commented on it going downhill. Things go wrong; it’s how it’s dealt with that is important. The Fergus dealt with the air conditioning problem very badly indeed and I’m sure will have lost a lot of customers as a result. I will certainly not return.
