The botanic garden surrounding the house has been cultivated over a fifty-year period by three generations of owners; the gardens host hundreds of orchids, exotic trees and local fauna and flora unique to the island. The gardens were conceived in 1964 to take advantage of St Lucia’s rich volcanic soil, the island’s perfect growing conditions, and Morne Trulah’s spectacular views. The previous owners enlisted the island’s foremost horticulturalist, Veronica Shingleton-Smith (owner of Mamiku Botanic Gardens) to oversee the construction of planting out of the gardens. With a background in London stage design, her creation provides the dramatic structure. More recent works by Michael Mills amended and extended the gardens with the richest soils and collections of the island’s most exotic and endangered plant species.
