My husband and I just returned from Vieques last night after a wonderful 4-night anniversary stay at the Esperanza Inn. From initial booking to the day we arrived to the day we left, we felt like family. Suzann, Tyler, and Pebble (their sweet pup) provided a friendly and warm environment that was unobtrusive yet felt familiar, like visiting family members you enjoy spending time with. We stayed in The Palms, and loved it! We had everything we needed and ample space to relax and watch TV if we wanted, but we never turned it on. After every day, we truly looked forward to returning to our “home” and relaxing with a glass of wine before bed. They’ve thought of everything – our room was stocked with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot, coffee/creamer, and mugs, along with sand towels and a cooler for the day. Downstairs in the shared kitchen, we could use the full space if we wanted to cook, though we preferred to eat out every day. I DID, however, enjoy the coffee my husband poured for me from the shared kitchen every morning so it saved us time from me making my own since I’d been sleeping in every day. Both Suzann and Tyler were excellent at advising us on areas of the island to visit based on our likes. We like to hike, so they recommended Mt. Pirata which is the highest point on Vieques at almost 1,000 feet. It recently opened to the public, so we HAD to hike that. It was steep but paved the entire way, and the observation deck at the top allowed us a beautiful view out to the mainland of Puerto Rico and other islands, with a couple of benches for resting under a mango tree. Esperanza Inn is nicely located less than a block off of the Malecon, making it super easy to leave your vehicle and walk to several restaurants, bars, and a beach. It’s also only about a 5-minute walk to where the bioluminescent tours depart! Be sure to check out the sunset from the top of El Blok which is at the opposite end of the Malecon, but still only about 5 minutes to walk there. We did use our rented vehicle every day though as we ventured around the island to see several beaches, the rum distillery, the Arepas Festival in Isabela, the 400-year-old Ceiba tree, Mosquito Pier, the bunkers, and other sites. I highly recommend renting a 4-wheel drive. We rented an SUV, but it was a Kia Soul and really wasn’t conducive to the type of terrain on Vieques. When we travel there again, we will rent a Jeep or Bronco for a nicer ride to the beaches off the beaten path and to the Sugar Mill Ruins and the archeological site. We will absolutely stay at Esperanza Inn again and look forward to seeing Suzann, Tyler, and Pebble whom we all thank for helping us create such a nice anniversary trip!
