My wife and I visited on Saturday 5th April. This is the third time we have visited the lovely Bar/Restaurant. There is a gentleman who works behind the bar. Did not get his name. He was the only male with a bit of a beard where we had the displeasure to have been insulted by. The other time when he was not on duty was great and friendly. This male is arrogant and very sharp and unpleasant! He needs to go on a course that teaches customers care and manners. If we ever visit again and he is behind the bar we will just walk out! We were going to recommend the Battlesteads to family and friends as Wark is a lovely little village will not be recommending if he is working there. There are other apartments available in the village, so my advice to any potential visitor is to go elsewhere.

We had received gift vouchers for a meal and the observatory experience. The food was excellent and well presented, and the staff were lovely. A shout out to Catherine who was exceptional. Sadly the skys didn’t oblige and we couldn’t see much, but it means we will be back.

When arriving we were greeted with 'what do you want?' rather than how can I help you. When I asked if we can check in were told we were too early and that was it, nothing polite about this. I presumed she was having a bad day so left it at that. The lodge was a good size, although dirty, coffee cup rings on glass, stains on pillowcase and when we went to use the whirlpool bath, black bits came out. The service in the restaurant was average at best, we waited ages to be serviced and although she apologised it still wasn't good enough. We weren't asked once if we would like another drink or any sauces, but other tables around us were asked! The beds were very uncomfortable, felt like cheap mattresses. Unfortunately we will not be recommending this place to friends

Fabulous hotel and exceptional staff, food delicious and would love to return soon, thanks to the lovely genuine staff who subtly made it such a pleasant stay. Comfortable bed, tasty breakfast and little bonus treat of fruit in room, decor really nice

we visited for evening dinner before visiting the observatory on the last night of our North Yorkshire/northumberland trip. the food was really good, the service great and we moved onto the observatory. as it was a late finish we decided to stay and secured a room at 2230hrs. and was given a lodge. the room was amazing, warm and cosy and wished we had checked in earlier! breakfast was great, service good again. the 2 stars comes from the experience once we left. upon returning home we realised my partner had left her jumper hung up in the wardrobe. she rang and was told by the male answering the phone to email the pub who will arrange to post back. great we thought. she did that and never got a reply. we have this email as evidence. with no reply received after a few days she rang again. the same person answered and she explained the email had been sent and he said he would look into it. further 2 days pasted and when she rang again a female answered and said they haven't got the jumper. a disappointing end and incredibly poor customer service.

OUTSTANDING , food , hotel , staff , room EVERYTHING was 100% outstanding, they operate a time slot arrangement for dining which works brilliant , it means you get the full attention of the staff as well as swift service on the food, will definately go back to stay or even just to dine.

Amazing hotel. Comfortable. Clean. Great eco credentials. We stayed in a lodge, which was spacious and full of character. Fantastic bathroom. Really liked the restaurant and pub. The attached observatory was also an interesting experience, even on the (disappointingly) cloudy night we were there. Would happily stay there again.

We stayed here with our dog enroute both up and down the country on a recent holiday. Both rooms were clean and tidy. In the first the bathroom could've done with a bit of refresh and the overlarge bath seemed unnecesary, was too large for my wife and took up a but too much of the bathroom. A minor point and we would certainly stay again probably as a longer stay as there is so much to do in this part of the world.

What a great place to stay. It has the feel of a cosy inn (we visited for four nights at the end of November/start of December) with cosy accommodation. Our room (number 1) was fairly small but very well appointed and equipped and we enjoyed it hugely. Also available (at extra cost) are the fantastic cabins at the rear (we took a sneaky peek inside one). The dining areas are stylish, light and open and the food is very good indeed. But the crowning glory are the staff - everyone was welcoming and friendly and some especially happy to enjoy a joke with us. There's plenty of parking and, of course, the observatory at the back, where we booked star gazing sessions on each of our four nights in the hope of seeing the northern lights. The lights didn't oblige, but seeing stars and planets through a large telescope in a dark sky area was inspiring. The sessions are run by an associated but separate company and I'll review them elsewhere.
